Hi dudes!

Well.. i have a BIG troubble.. i have around of 6 months trying making Psytrance tracks. well well well.. I HATE THIS WORLD!!! I HATE REASON I HATE CUBASE I HATE ALL! I CANT DO MUSIC!! x'(

All the ppl saying that the best soft to make psy is Reason 2.x and Cubase SX, i have it two, and a lot of VST's. but.. the problem is in HOW can i interact all the sounds (sound layers) in 1 only layer of sequence containing ALL (bassess, effects, sequences, etc) ??¡¡¿¿¡?!?!!!! I CAN make some good bass-lines but i dont know what's the next! SOMEBODY can give me help?? PLEASE!!

Thanks a lot ravers!! peace!

There is no such thing as the best sequencer! so dont spend your time thinking about this, just try as many programs as you can or feel atracted to....eventually choose one and get real with it...

right now you got lots of balls to juggle and it all seems as a mess cause you cant even juggle with 2 balls right now... so you need to slowdown... stop thinking about all the physical things like which sequencer is the best and stuff like that... you got plenty of options thats why you are confused, and you dont know enough about production to make an aware choice..

so start with a single thought,
maybe a soundeffect that you want to make.
First of all you need to find out how this is achieved in your host, are there many ways or just one..
now try to figure this out, when you know how its done in many different ways you can continue your quest...

if you are uncertain about parameters the only way you can learn what they do is to twist the knobs/faders in different ways, small adjustments, big adjustments and inbetween...and of course read about the instrument/tool... some parameters only works in context of others, and im talking cents here

basicly you got lots to figure out and lots to think about... its natural and the only way to sort things out is to grab a thought and work it out...

slowdown! quality takes time so dont stress...

anyway you ask whats next, well this is can be important and it can sometimes not be... you decide whats next, thats the beauti of it all...

try to gather your "one man band" and before you start to fiddle with the music, make some guidelines, maybe choose 3-5 elements that you got to do before you can carry on... set a goal and work for it, its good to make plans and fullfill them, it makes you happy even if its shit you got to the goal and thats the point....

Laters and good luck!

just keep trying.. dont give up..its not like theres a magic formula..i have been triyng for 5 years 2 in fruity and 3 in cubase and still trying to get my sound and my style..it helps if u have a musical backround.. after all psytrance is music and its about songs not just tracks..
start witha bassline then some drum grooves,, after u got that u can ad some lead and atmospheres..try to get an idea in ur head before starting...its not just gonna pop out from nowhere...
good luck..

Hello i just wanted to say that i have been finding VSTi's extremely resourceful and inspiring for making psy-trance. And i have to say that before i found out about them, i was extremely confused, and i feel like now i've crossed some kind of line, its a line which most professionals i think forget that they crossed, and in doing so concise the version of how to make music to a beginner. There's nothing better than beginners i reckon. They're full of questions not answers.

Hipsylon, i tell what i found out recently in my beginning stages...

One thing you need is a midi keyboard.

This is necessary is you want to get away from clicking a mouse to asign changes to music, and instead use a keyboard to 'play' sounds, things such as velocity [how hard you hit the note] really make up for dynamics rather than having to asign the change manually with a mouse.

So that is my recommendation, get a midi keyboard. I have the edirol-pcra30 and it works fine for me, it has its own audio interface and the latency [delay from hitting a note to actually hearing it] is quite low if you are recording live instruments.

Secondly, in addition to experimenting with programs like reason, fruity and cubase, i would like to recommend more 'intuitive' programs like ableton 4.0 and acid pro. These are sequencers. Much like cubase and logic on the mac.

I'm not saying they're the best programs or sequencers, just that they're simple, and this will help you making sounds and lessen frustration.

Thirdly you need what are called VSTi's or 'soft synths', and this is a real good reason while you need a midi keyboard.

Recently the VSTi's that seem real good for psy-trance which you might like to try get hold of are vanguard, the pro-53, and the z3ta+. I have also heard good things about ones called Synapse Hydra, and Tera 2.0. There are many to choose from and probably many threads about on this forum.

I was very confused about VSTi's for quite a while because people were using the term VST and VSTi to mean the same thing, when in fact they are quite different. VST's [virtual studio technology] are effects which you apply to your already layed down or live audio/midi. VSTi's {i for instrument] are, you guessed it, instruments.

For a long time i couldn't understand how people were getting sounds out of pure effects... it didn't make sense till i realised the 'pro's' had shortened their vocabulary, and were using the same term for both technologies. Now that i understand, i couldn't care less, but before when i didn't know it was a maze trying to understand what was going on.

So, in essence, VSTi's are very similar to what the racks in reason act like, their virual racks of hardware, and some emulate old-school physical organs, and synthesizers that came out in the 80's and stuff. Their are brand new ones too.

And the way they work is, metaphorically, similar to the way you can rewire reason as a slave program to a host sequencer like ableton. Instead of 'Rewiring', most sequencers will dedicate a VST file on your hard-drive, and you install all of the VSTi' and VST's to this folder, and then your sequencer knows where to find them.

Apart from that i would say get your hands on as many samples as possible, and also, buy a few magazines like 'computer music', which is good for beginners.

1.get a midi keyboard

2.check out ableton and acid pro for easy music making.

3.get your hands on some VSTi's and a shitload of samples.

4. make music!

Good Luck mate!

p.s. there are a million different directions you could go to from here, before or after. i am simply offering a method which has been helpful to me, and is also heaps of fun! VSTi's are awesome!

Hey Art, you don't *have* to have a MIDI keyboard - I don't have one. Sure, they can be useful, but not essential.           Find my music here - www.soundclick.com/bands/0/qualiummusic.htm

Cool! thanx 4 the info dude! I'm lear about all the reply's of the friends that answer my question! (Thnx all!) Im working more on it bro, i was downloading some good VST's and i'll get more arranged at the "psytrance" production.. i was analyzing some tracks that i like, and i'm trying to catch all the ideas around effects and sequences... I get the idea now, and im working hard in 1 track..So, im trying too to find out the VST's that you say, but without luck! i dont know if you can send me an URL or send me via MSN/ICQ the files that you tell me!?? Well.. i have Acid 4.0 too but i think if i dont put a start point with 1 soft in special, i never do with 1 or other one.. so, Im choosing Reason and cubase (for now) if God put me his light on me and make me a good music maker i try some sophisticated softs! well.. too i will pay a MIDI Keyboard, i think the same as you say, fo sure it's more easy make sound with something physycal (midi) as the computer mouse (its very hard).. i think in some other months or 1 year.. i dont know, i will do a Live act, and i'm back to the forum to post how luck i get!
