I have to disagree here. The first flow of goa artists were already quite experienced in electronic music and certainly not low level. A milestone album like Hallucinogen's Twisted was on par with the production of regular techno, house and club but the structures and moreoever melodies were somehow from a musical perspective much closer to rock than conventional dance music. PPL like Doof, Chi-AD, Blenn were excellent musicians as well as great producers.
With regards to label owners, Youth was prolly the most prominent one back then and as a member of Killing Joke he was far from a low level or starting musician.
The psytrance scene was built on drugheads, thats true, but the pioneers had 'as a rule' excellent musical skills...
For the current situation your theory kinda applies.

Ow, I thought that 'from who psy trance scene built on' referred to the pioneers. |

i agree with Goblim and Xp.
The scene is not the same and therefore Goblim has a right to feel that way. I don't listen to much of the new psy these days cos it's all the same.
Xp is completely right...in that kids with a comp and access to a few ripped software are just putting together a series of noise bits for 7 minutes with some kind of reasonable flow and they're pretty much out there before you know it.
Where is the music?? |

Magic, shamanistic, flower power jumping, shouting of joy, mind twirling hallucinations!!!!

no, itīs dead...yet.
thereīs still some good music released.
but... when i think about it. i donīt listen to any artists that has released their first psy-track later than 1998. so in a way itīs dead.
hmm...i donīt think itīs fair to complain too much about it. let the people create the music they whant. if you donīt like it donīt listen to it.
i know i donīt. for sure itīs boring that i canīt go to a lot of parties anymore because of the music....i hope it will change...
the only thing you can do about it is: make your own music and parties...
  you know it.... |

You old-school trancers like me, just stop listening/buying/attending mega-parties, especially if they are full-on ones. Try going to small ones, where real good taste, classy trance is still appreciated.
There are still a lot of people who still throw parties for trancing, not for "be seen and show-off" as it is going nowadays.
Keep shouting "I want trance back!!!" lol
someday someone will listen.

Well, let me tell you about my own personal experience with trance. I've started listening to it too late in my life, when I was 45, and this was in 2001, much later than most of you started doing it.
I was too much into classical music, jazz and experimental "avant-garde" music. When I've first listened to trance, it appeared to me as so much refreshing, had a very strong touch of abstraction which I enjoy very much in any form of art.
Besides that, it seemed to me that the creation possibilities were simply endless, for the "psychedellic" component added an almost infinite array of personal experiences to the creation process, (from the composer perspective, of course).
And from the strictly musical point of view, as it looked, the musicians had no fear at all in terms of "daring". The music as whole was daring, challenging. Ppl were clearly willing to experiment, try new ways to express themselves musically.
Then, suddenly, something hit this "trance world" and the music begun to follow a certain "standard" a certain "formula". (And this has nothing to do with style). Maybe due to commercial reasons, who knows.
I still listen a lot to psy. I make a point out of doing it. But I really think that it has lost a lot of its creative strength. Many authors now, purposedly resource to easily recognizable excerpts of famous tunes trying to draw attention to their creations, maybe beacause they're fully aware that, as it is, their music otherwise won't attract nobody's attention.
There's a lot of mnemonic psytrance nowadays.
I don't think trance is dead. But it's not psychedellic anymore, in any sense. |

Well if you really want to know what a good party is, there will be an old style trance party in Japan in September. Just two days, with Planet BEN, Joerg and the some stylish japanese DJs in the control such as Abe from LTS, Kagiwo from Blue Moon Party and Gyro from Portalalca. Try looking for info in the Japan section.

i think its not dead at all, in fact i has multiplied so much that a lot of limits have been faded away,
personally i dont like full on at all, but they are the ones who are opening the way for new people to find this scene. they represent the superficial and commercial aspect, and although their music is completey formulaic they are the ones who are making this movement stronger and bigger. i do agree with the fact that specially full on has lost its psychedelic touch, its not daring anymore, its not exploring any new paths at all.
but at the same time psychedelic is expanding throughout the world, there have been a lot of internal changes which i think are quite interesting and a very good proof that its still alive. Night trance for example is a style which is developing a lot now, you have a lot of young kinds doing crazy music and a lot of small labels who are starting to release it. Night trance is all about taking music to the deepest level possible, its truly daring, psychedelic and completely twisted, there is no way you will see a video from Serotax on Sony (like Infected Mushroom did).
Also in this aspect you have proggresive psy trance, which is a completely different direction, exploring grooves and nice rhythms, you have the psychedelic touch and you have this chuggy groove that makes people dance.
The psychedelic spirit is still out there, its just a question of perspective. It has changed and transformed but the essence is still the same. Full on cleary is not willing to explore anything new, i can no longer see the difference between astrix, atomic pulse, gms, or any of the leading full on artists, they are all at the same shallow level, dancefloorism at its worst.
But in night trance, you have this cosmic competition to make the craziest tracks possible.
All this changes and mutations of psychedelic trance, from full on, to prog, to night trance have opened the way for a lot of new people to join the movement, you have more people going to the parties, more artists, more labels. its not dead, it has changed, and so have you! its no the music's fault, or the scene's fault, its just you, getting older, changing, dont hold back to the past, embrace all this new things which are incredible!
for example is psychedelic didnt grow so much, it would have never reached my country (Argentina) and thank god it did! my life would have been completely different maybe i would have stayed been a deppresive-industro-goth fool all of my life! psychedelic is positive and its great its growing, so long live psychedelic trance
