Most genres work on trends and formulas. This applies to psytrance as well, since it's not just a small bunch of hippies in the psytrance world anymore.
Even in the more experimental genres there are trends and a change in the music all the time, for better or worse (or both).

Goblim, I feel the same as you sometimes. lose my faith, get bored...
The best thing to do is sort of like treat it as a girlfriend, give it a break, go for other birds (music) if you find something better, forget about the previous one, but always come back and check whats going on and how are things and maybe just maybe you might fall in love with it again.

my view is that once the NOVELTY has faded and the edge has been blunted it is harder and harder to get to that level of exitment u had as a new trance lover. its like drugs - eventually u end up chasing the dragon.
lets consider the musician's point of view - how easy is it to do something ORIGINAL do u think? how easy is it to make a bass line that has never been done before? I'll tell u how - IMPOSSIBLE!!! as impossible as writing a rock song that will not remind something that has been already done. thats life, thats music and thats the way art is in general - originality and quality are rare commodities and u better exept that or u will find your self dissapointed too many times from everything beginning with food and ending with relationships....

I couldn't agree more... nicely put. everyone complains psytrance releases aren't as 'original' sounding as they used to be - that there's too much formula. the truth is, the first time you hear any genre it sounds exciting, new and original - and then you start figuring out that most of the stuff is pretty mediocre - the up-side is that your taste becomes more discerning and when you find a true gem you can really appreciate it.
as for true originality in music, the last time I heard any modern artists produce anything that really surprised me was when i bought radiohead's 'hail to the thief' album' .... now that's real class. |

I'll give you a few reasons why you are wrong:
Prometheus
FREq
Haltya
Wizzy Noise
Hux Flux
Each expressive and unique in their own way...

guy shanti i totally agree with u....
ur post made a lot of sense, especially the part about how hard it is to make a new bassline that nobody has done b4... i think too many of the people complaining have never tried to make music themselves... so people if u think u can do better u should give it a try, then u will see how difficult it is to make good music, then maybe u will be more tolerant.... |

Just like in mainstream music, you get a new band that has a 'unique' sound/style that for some reason gets popular, within a month or two, record companies and focus groups spit out a dozen other bands that sound EXACTLY the same, then that genre gets overplayed/tired/tried, then up comes the next new and amazing thing.
Of course, in the meantime, outside of whats 'mainstream', theres loads of amazing music being produced and released, it just takes a bit more effort to find it, same thing can be said for psytrance.
Like Basilisk pointed out above, each of those artists are very different from eachother and pretty unique in their own way.
However, theres also a dozen other 'lesser' artists ripping off their sound/style.
Psytrance is also getting more popular, more popular = more people producing, more producers = more stuff getting released. However, quanitiy != quality,
takes some digging, but theres still alot of great/new/unique stuff being put out there, theres psytrance outside of saikosounds and psyshop

For me,the problem, that psy trance(lets call like this wierd dark cranchy noisy stuff)had always one problem-apart of very few good artists in this area, the rest have very low production quality.
Then.More of the psy musicians are one the JUST STARTED level.I mean, they are the post product of Goa Trance paties, starting with the producing last 2-3 years.Thats when Psy trance became popular.
So,they felt themself to make music, and for this generation of the trancelovers, computer is something they grow up with,so they lerned fast the technical side of basic programms (Q_base,Logic or whatever).
But if we call trance a music-people who make it,have also to have a knowlege about note grammatic, tonalities and all this details.
As I know and as I listen ,very few of Psy Artists have an idea about all this, more experimating with the sounds.
Result-it is the experemental stuff for the closed rounds of THAT TYPE OF MUSIC FANS.
At the beginning,as a new style,it was attractive, but then....hmmm....to hard for acception of more of the ppl on the dancefloors, hard of rthe car,for the house.
It is particular condition music, you have to be in this condition and love this stuff.
So,defenetly is good for underground small A/C parties.
Othervise it get boring.
The sales of more of the Psy labels are going down, and some of the big labels (like acidance)are very down as well.
So,thats my private opinion.
I see the changes for last 10 years. |

I think there is a lot of new original psy out there. It's just a matter of looking for it. Obviously, percent-wise, it has gone down, which is only natural with the huge increase in releases, but there are a lot of worthwhile releases out there. And you have to admit that the actual quality of the sound (not the music oroginality itself), the mastering is getting better and better.
But that's just my 2 kopecks

MHO: Hate the scene, love the music
i also was one of those who for years wanted to tell everyone i knew that psytrance was awesome. now i dont tell anyone and just enjoy it to myself. I often hear tracks that sound quite original however more often they are made by djs i've never heard of and usually i never hear them again |

Psytrance is dead for me as well..
no originality as being said before. fast builded tracks for fast festival wanabe stars..Or tracks built with certain guidelines just to be danceable.. Who went out there to put lyrics for example and talk to the people for serious matters..
"We" preach for love peace and unity and we prefer to dance here and there around the globe while so many things are going on in this planet.. we are "expanding" our awareness with the psychedelics but in fact we are getting f**ed in the brain more an more and we dont see the exact problems in our societies.. like war..like discrimination and unemployment.
and this is totaly reflected in the music that our listening.. the music is turning progressive because of urbanization.. i am not saying it is good or bad however you can
judge by yourselves.
and another thing .. someone said quantity = quality.. maybe not.. in production terms maybe.. but quantity does not mean quality of course..
cheers and be well |

It's beyond music. It's the people.
and pleiadian, you're not alone - there are more of us that think the same. Suggested action taking is more than welcome.
