can use either reverb...
As far as panning is concerned, try to pan so frequencies from different tracks don't cancel each other out.

Good tip, but i am more interested in ways to make a sound appear in a certain position. Like, 3D.

Go crazy with fx and leads and make sure you don't overdo the panning either, or the peeps on the dancefloor might get motionsick and puke their guts out.

Are you serious?
I never thought about it but it may be possible.

Interesting, we start entering the real problem... thats what i couldn't really explain with the 6x Stereo situation....
Just sit down and start listening and routing and soon u know what i mean, Mixing is extremly complicated and need LOTS of time.
We need some practice and some guys here who follow us step by step so we can find out solutions.
Anyone here has a perfect 5.1 Mixsituation with 5 identical Monitorspeakers AND extra Subwoofer?
Today every DAW could do 5.1 routing afaik.
My experiences:
My first conclusion after some time of trial and error was Stereo Sources like Synthesizers i routed f.i. on channel C and Fr. (no panning)becaus all these Sounds are not dry they are already with effects and "space".
Pure mono source like percussion instruments (take a cowbell) i routed to 1 speaker like Centeror very often one of the 2 surronds. Drums (midi) i panned into the Fl and Fr or Sl and Sr
Panning was not used very often because the "panning" in later stages is the position in the 360° circle...
for the effect i let some interesting things move through the room...
A PAD Keyboardsound f.i. starts in Stereo Fr and FL and moves slowly to the Sr and Sl.
That ist the kind of panning i did...
I am not an experienced DAW guy i started from the listeninf side, i made the Speakers for perfect Monitoring... after a while i entered the mixing aswell cuz i didnt like what i heard from the mixing of my friend who was the mixer first...
i started to remix all from beginnig
We just did a kind of Test CD to get some experience in 5.1...
I suggest everyone here to listen to an A Parsons 5.1 record on a real High End 5.1 Home-Cinema Chain...even if u maybe not like this music he shows the capabilities of 5.1...
I dont know any better sample for 5.1 Music.
Always remember i am a newbie and i did it 2002!
I used premade samples and some added stuff done by some friends they gave me free of charge.

I was thinking about something else completely.
How about some software that will render a sound inside a space and output it in a multi channel format.
I am looking for hologram-like 3D sound.
I know it exists because i have heared it but no normal mixing tools make this effect.

I totally disagree Aeon,
not only have you no control over your lfe, but you also lack a center channel which is really cool if you want to bring sounds from front to back and vica versa within your mix.
Quadraphonic also has pretty big cancellation issues, more so than 5.1, at least in my experience. If the party organizers knew anything about weighing out a 5.1 sound system, you might agree to disagree as well...

if you have more experience with party organizers & doing 5.1 on a big scale, i totally accept your opinion!
it's just that we have been looking at putting on surround parties for a while, and whoever owns the rig, it seems like quad has been the most practical to implement.
lacking a centre channel isn't so bad - after all, stereo music lacks a centre channel
i hear what you guys are saying about cancellation, particularly with a big system!
either way, i think any efforts to move beyond stereo are welcome |

if we really want to "solve" any multichannel Problems we need to start at "ZERO".
I have 5.1 experience from 1995 (when i first visited Lucasfilm, to understand that THX ideas).
For live experience you can start with 4 channels, but there is no limit...
remember Beatles in the times where ther was no PA existing or better, it was for Voice only?
U have drums (in Stereo), Guitar1 Guitar 2 Bass and voices . If u position those amps surrounding u u have multichannel. That what i wanted to make clear...
Make a difference Mulitchannel and "Surronud Sound ala Home Cinema". Again my suggestion,we jump from one point to another but we dont get the guys here to a practicable solution. Can we do a separate thread and realy start and explain step by step?

The problem with THX is that apart from being not necessarily better than conventional surround is that is is a copyrighted system. They come and checks out your place, weigh your speakers and set the sound up.
When Star Wars 3, Return of the Jedi came out Lucas would only show the movie on THX cinemas, so pretty much everyone went to THX.
THX as a system is a great idea, it does not necessarily mean that the sound in the cinema that has THX is better than in the cinema that doesn't...
And apart from it being a good system for room accoustics and speakersetup, the copyright remains. And it costs money to get installed... I call THX a good money machine. It is a great idea, nevertheless, it is a money machine and not guaranteed to be the best in surround sound there is.
It is a standard that claims to be sounding most similar to what the mixer intended. I have mixed in THX studios and non THX studios and I cannot say that something sounds better simply because it bears the THX trademark logo.

On another note, there are plenty of synths that are surround sound capable, Absynth to begin with. Having a crazy drone in a controlled 5.1 environment, is truly an amazing experience.
Audioholic, definitely my kind of living room! How much???

thats just a Foto of real HiFi freak for some inspiration. We are in my opinion not ready for a Multichannel Surround Thread.
the steps before:
how many guys here have a 5.1 mixing situation (+Monitors)?
also:
we have to define first what a 5.1 studio and whats not...
and then
there is 2 main lines to go parallel
Musical part (creativity and how to with the Synths, thats mainly a part i cant help, sorry)
and a technical part , how is it done with the hardware (+roomacoustics positioning of speakers etc...here i could jump in)
We should start here and find out how many are interested and how important is the Thema for the majority...
its maybe a Chaotic thread but i think its ok for a first "brainstorming"...
