It might surprise you to learn that deadact.com would have seen a fair amount of traffic even in the early days of our little scene. It was not uncommon to see two DAT players nestling next to the SH101. The first time I remember seeing a laptop with a bunch of WAV files lined up on a laptop was at a party we played at in 2001, with Manmademan. As it goes, we played that gig with our biggest-ever live sequenced setup, alternating tracks off DAT with tracks off the live rig. I think that was also the last gig we took our entire studio on stage for; we'd just started using a proper DAW ourselves and it was becoming impossible to recreate tracks live the way we had been up to then.

We were very lucky, and never had a serious equipment failure on stage that I can recall; we'd DAT-record runthroughs of our live sets at home before the gig and run it in parallel with the live set as a backup, but I don't think we ever had to use it... not like poor Simon P. at the above album release party, who suffered severe sampler failure at the beginning of his set :/

Aha... but I wouldn't want to DJ from Spotify or Youtube

If you Dj you get money, if you get money, pay for the music that brings you money...

What was wrong with this concept?

The 'paying' bit, I think.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

I never understood why a vibrant scene with a great DJ culture evolved into a fake live act scene with no creativity at all (press play and look cool).

I have asked this before too, where and when exactly did live acts started to dominate the scene? which ones where the first, and why the crowd started liking them more?

dunno when it started to dominate the scene, since i m into psytrance live act are there and it was there before..(i think x dream played live in 92 here)but it s not the same now, before guys were using real gears, it was more like a real live.

Trust me, I've sunk tens of thousands of dollars into buying music over the years

time slowly flies away, globalization gains an accelleration exponentially, the world is getting digitized and becomes more and more trans-parent..

..imho records sales will be multiplied in upcoming years

also it won't take too long to complete a meditation on why it doesn't sell at this veRy moment~

Like someone said...
Dont sell cause people dont listen...its simple...
Imagine how many cd copies lady gaga sells...how many illegal downloads people do from her music...
10% cds / 10% legall downloads / 80% warez...

I think is more or less the same in psytrance...
But we are talking about 1/324234234234 part of a lady gaga audience...

Direct artist payment is the best solution....beaport hack 50% of the money, label 25%, and the artist...25%?? ridiculous...

Are you some sort of expert in sales figures for the established music industry or do you just assume things?

I seriously doubt Lady Gaga only sell 10%. In fact recent studies showed there's a good solid sale in CD's when it come to huge commercial names. Younger kids and their Parents still buy a heck of a lot CD's worldwide

I teach kids in music and I was surprised to see how many CD's they buy a month. All paid for by their parents.

The "commercial name" game and cd's died along time ago. The (artist/label) money is made in ringtones. Cd's cover cost, Artist are not getting that money.

Im not a expert...but I believe is like that...isnt a statistics report...its my opinion...

If you are a superstar, then is more easy to find "free" downloads on the internet...in the same way is more easy to find a cd on a store...

agreed with chemistry...today big artists wins in different ways...not CD sales...

Those studies tell you about sale figures. Do they also tell you what percentage of the whole "Lady Gaga consumption volume" those sales constitute? If yes, please share those data with the rest of us. If not - ask yourself the same question you asked above. Are you an expert or do you just assume?

On wikipedia it says that she sold 12 million copies from the album, who cares if that is 10 %, compare that to the max 500 copies sold in the average psy trance scene           VA - Spiritual Science out now!

This proves that producing psy trance is NOT a good way to make money and those that think it may be are delusional.

The argument was that sales in psytrance are low because overall "attendance" is low. Let's (just as an example) go with this completely arbitrary number: 10% of listeners buy their music. It may or may not be real, but let's stick with it for a second. The figures you quoted here then simply mean that the total of 120 million people listen to Lady Gaga, while only 5000 people listen to an average psytrance artist. In other words, Kristian's music gets pirated as much (percent-wise) as Billy Joel's, but people overall care about Billy Joel and don't care about Kristian.

If I had to choose an explanation for the Subj. we are discussing, I would go with Psychowave's model first and only then add other factors, like "hippiness" of psytrancers etc.
