Agreed about the commercial sound and donations to free net labels being a utopia, but the BPM not so sure. A lot of the israeli prog artists that play left right and center, play below 140.

Peace.

the same song gos on....
I think you should first ask yourself as an artist, do you want to live/pay your bills with the music you produce??
then if so, you should do some research if you don't already know what kind of style/genre does sell and through which channels.
but yeah making underground music to a small group (psycrowd) and thinking you gonna make money then you should wake up cause it's not realistic.
so bottom line: you want to do music for the business or as your hobby.
you have solved this, you have solved your dilema!           to use your head you have to go out of your mind

Someone should do a market survey on a digital download site like Beatport and graph what BPM/Key sells the most.

I never want to have to rely on psytrance to pay the bills... that would mean I should stop making the music I like and conform to a certain sound, when the reason I do this in order to maintain a healthy relationship with my mind.

Check the Spintwist releases. They top the charts.
Actually I just checked the top 10 tunes on Beatport today. They go from 130 to the fastest being at 138.

Peace out.

This attitude is ridiculous! I absolutely love my FLAC/WAV/MP3s.

I get the same art.

I get the same music in the *Exact* same quality

However, I do not support completely *wasteful* use of precious resources used in the pressing and distribution process.

Also, buying direct from an artist is more money in their pocket. I will never buy another CD ever again...

CDs are not made with love. They're made by machines. The *MUSIC* is made with love (well, hopefully) and the medium on which the music exists has nothing to do with it or the experience of it..

at least to me. my 2c.

Why is it rediculous to collect cds? And i didn't mean digital sales are bad or anything, i was just saying me personaly prefer cds instead of downloading them, its awsome that u can pick single tracks on beatport and such from half crappy compilations and stuff, but for me cds still rule, more holy then a beatport buy. But this is from a collectors view, not a dj.

"precious resources used in the pressing and distribution process" this is a minus alright, but there are worse things in the world i prioritize before that.

cheers.

From what I understood, Will was responding to the "soul-less mp3s/wavs" comment, not the collection of CDs.
Wavs do have a soul, its imprinted in the same way it is on CDs, in 1s and 0s.

Peace.

Cd? i don t have any attachement to this format, i like more wav on my hdd
vinyls case are art like a paint for me and i like the object in itself ,and the sound is "warmer" going from my technics to my amp than the sterile sound of cd or wav

yeah, totally. CDs are a very poor collector's item. there is no lasting value there and they inevitably get destroyed with regular use. I used to collect CD's as a kid until I realized I had been bamboozled. If you're a collector, vinyl is the only way to go.           http://soundcloud.com/rob-vector

Beatport was stablished when very few people believed you could make money selling digital music. It was ahead of almost every other store on the net.

They risked, and it payed. IMHO it's still the best store, but other at catching up, and give EDM a good start with digital sales.

Many criticize because there is a perception it only promotes cheesy music in its charts.

The reality is that must people buying only looks out for charts. And since there are so many wanna be dj's out there all of them shops from the same charts, psuhing cheesy tracks to the top.

But you can also find so much "underground" stuff on BP that is ovewhelming. Just ignore the charts and go digging.

IMO the biggest reason for psytrance dont selling is simple: there arent many psytrance dj's.

DJ's are the ones that consume more EDM music, they do it for playing at gigs. But in the psytrance scene there is no place for dj's, its only about "live acts". And also, since there are very few "small venues" for psytrance there is no market for dj's, as there are clubs all over the world for techno, house, etc.

So, as long as psytrance is dominated by the live act culture there wont be any increase in sales, it would continue its stagnation with buch of live acts playing at every party, cause there are very few ways new music gets to the ears of the public.

I consider myself a collector/appreciator of music moreso than a DJ - I don't buy single tracks, I buy whole albums or compilations.

I support the labels and artists I love.

What is the big difference between digital and CD considering that you get the same art and the same music???

I really don't get why people love CDs so much. They scratch, they're small so whatever art is on them is...well...super small - they usually come in cheapo plastic packages.

You may say that there are worse things in the world - and you are right. However, that to me is not a logical argument.

Just because there are worse things out there does not mean that the little things (especially little things done by lots of people) do not add up and have an environmental toll. This especially makes no sense when you're not getting anything additional out of it...at all.

And who even listens to CDs anymore? Everyone listens on ipods, or has car stereos with external inputs...my main speaker system is my computer!

I just don't get it

I download, burn on a rewritable CD and check it out in my car. After a couple of days - rinse, repeat. If I like it enough to keep it, I burn it again - on a regular CD.

Yes, I have MP3 players too, but little to no time to use them. Love exercising to "Space No More" or falling asleep to Lauge's SoundCloud collection (checking out a "borrowed" copy of "Langbortistan" now too). That's about it.

I wish they'd post sales figures! It is extremely difficult to estimate the volume of psytrance sales through Beatport. Obviously the other genres are doing quite well but I hear a lot of mixed reports about the success of psytrance on Beatport.

You are also settled in a home with a wife and kids if I am not mistaken. For us transient folk CDs are merely dead weight Personally, I love having almost instant access to absolutely any song I'd ever want to play... there's something magical about that.

Very good point. In other scenes there is a lot of money flowing from party people to the organizers to the DJs to the labels and the back to the artists. That loop is not nearly as open in the psytrance world where few DJs are paid well and much of the music heard at parties isn't purchased, but pirated, shared between friends and labelmates, or simply an original creation from the artist's studio.

Anyhow, back to the original point: psytrance doesn't sell but is this due to lack of demand or the failure of existing businesses within the market to innovate?

well said! only thing is now I think "most" of those dj's download so it won't make a huge difference but in exposure to more people yes.
