If anyone is ever in the UK - come and check out Planet Zogg in Sheffield. Dil & Greg who run the night mix up techno, trance & psy trance.
http://www.planetzogg.co.uk
There are surpisingly few other UK Djs who do - but Pod from Ripsnorter/Tribe of Frog in Bristol is another.
Maybe its the fact that they are all a similar age (mid/late 30s) and so were brought up on all sorts of dance music without being limited to one "scene"
Its sad that there is so little interaction between scenes - especially as there is lot of musical cross over.

IMO techno is psytrance without all the good stuff that gets layered on top. Music with "just beat" stopped interesting me a couple of years into this scene... now my mind requires more. Psychedelic techno works best when there is more going on in the upper levels to give it distinctness. I tend to think these reactions depend on some critical factions - how long one has been listening to all this, and what kind of recreational substances one is into. In my case that is quite a while and none at all so YMMV

I used to play a lot of newer skool acid techno, you know the stuff that was just a little removed from hard dance. For me it had the intensity of some of the hard dance sound, but with none of the cheeze. That's one of the the reasons I was suceptible to the darker sound of psytrance as well. It had a lot of the techno influence rhytmically and the acidic nature to just go crazy... And less of the typical club trance melodics. This is what really made me want to write the type of stuff I do. I try to have the sounds that I use function as a semi melodic element, but at the same time, not using the melodic synths that you used to hear in the Oakenfold/BT days...

Not only is techno more focused on subtle rhythmic changes, it usually has a different feel, swings a bit more (accents are different) whereas most trance is stompy, on the beat. Also, the DJ has more license to mix techno albums on top of each other.
In many ways, techno is really more trancy than trance because you really have nest into the sound to hear it's development or least respond to the minute changes. The compositional elements aren't as strong as psytrance.
techno: booooom-cha-boom-chaaaa booooom-cha-boom-chaaaa
trance: boom-cha boom-cha

Good topic people!
Its also about different settings, I mean outdoor trance festivals camping etc, techno generally indoors at night only party, go home, thats it.
But there is cross over, Son Kite for example make no bones about it (Certainly the minimal techno influences are noticable). But techno and other artists never seem to acknowledge psy trance at all, how come festivals like Sonar in Barcelona every June never feature psy. Imho outfits like Infected Mushroom and Astrix are constantly pushing the boundaries of electronic music, and should come to show others the way, perhaps its best like that (ie keep it underground) except maybe in Israel where it is more main stream.
I have huge respect for the likes of techno maestros like Laurent Garnier who does says that techno draws on many types and styles of music, and who is a non-compromising artist musician of note, as well as a perveyor of damn fine progressive techno. I have got to Mars and back during his 6 hour sets! Also Sven Vath deserves a very prominent mention, as acknowldged elsewhere on Isatrance that psy diverged from his innovations, and I must say his Cocoon parties in Ibiza have been incredible, and he never lets up (still carts crates of vinyl around btw)
As i said, what I have found it more about context than the music, that is psy people like the outdoors and missioning, techno heads like to party just for night downtown.
For me, I can commute between them (an other scenes) no problems, even deep house its all down to dancing with friends and having a good time however my 1st love is definitely psy!

@ Kitnam:
Midi miliz soft??
Could you recommend some groups that make miliz sound soft, i would love to listen to them??
|
|
If you want some tech trance, that sound really phat, I can recommend the excellent K.U.R.O. - Satisfaction (Psyristor Tracks, reviewed in this forum).
If you're looking for more regular techno, with phat sounds, I can recommend you "the advent" (Sketched for life). Hard techno, very minimal pumping stuff which makes me cry and jump on the dancefloor . You can buy some good underground techno CDs at Tresor Berlin online shop [ www.tresorberlin.com ]. |

when you try to mix techno, just remember that most techno music released is made for mixing 2 or 3 tracks on top of one another. a good techno dj can improvise a lot with the sounds and create new stuff from old records. totally different from psytrance dj technique.

for all who like to hear hot hard techno tunes try:
chriss liebig (realy hard) or any compilation which is called "schranz".
Techno-Djs like to mix the vinyls on top of each other, its a real perfomance. jeff mills (the us-legend) is famous for mixing up more as 20 tunes tunes each minute !
carl cox mixes with 3 players.
@triac
completly agree.
lets go!

Well I don't totally agree with you. There are some techno artists who really make things different, as well as many mediocre trance production of course. A new and very talentuous techno artist who comes to my mind is Joris Voorn with his debut album "Future History". You can hear some samples from the CD on his website [ www.jorisvoorn.com ], and maybe listen some of his production on his label's website [ www.rejected.nl ].
Personnally I bought his album, and I find it excellent. Doesn't sound psychedellic at all but very tripping nevertheless . |

funny this discussion....because actually goatrance was considered at the time it was born an improvement of techno. Actually it was techno with a lot of melodies.
But in general the dance music is somehow fading, I think. But it won't disappear, only it will evolve in a new direction in order to survive, I think.
Anyway shiva-x I've hear some DJs remixing techno and psy in a very good way. Take X-Dream last release, it's a formula that mixes techno and psy, otherwise more techno than psy. And it worked well.

I mix alot of techno into my sets, I also use techno mix technique when playing trance using 3 sources, cuting inbetween them and going in-out-in-out.
alot of the techno-acid stuff really works on the croud, especially if it's a more open minded croud who don't want only the usual 145 Full on and in a club or night situation.
