I need some tips on the timing of leads (mostly) in psytrance? Like accenting the downbeat and such things. Ive heard about 5/4 timing before. Is this true? I know there are no rules but I need some guidance. Maybe someone can point me in the right direction?

Might be worth listening to a jazz track called 'Take 5' by Dave Brubeck to see what the feel of 5/4 is like. I've just finished a dnb track in 5/4. If you want to listen, I'll put it up some time soon. I would say though that it might be best to look for jazz and classical pieces in unusual time sigs if you're interested in learning about them - it's quite rare in dance music.
Otherwise are you talking about doing a tune in 4/4 and the lead in 5/4 so that it moves a beat later each bar of 4 then meets again 5 bars later? That's taking the idea of polyrhythms, and gives complex music - go for it. It's quite fun, I did a 3-beat synth loop, running against a 5-beat synth loop against 4/4 one time, which was interesting but i think the results could have been better - I'll keep trying eh?
I think the Shpongle time sigs were 6/8 mainly, which crossed over to 4/4, but there were probably more i don't remember exactly.

Good one SAX "take five" is the best example for 5/4 time signature.
doing a 5/4 lead on 4/4 colud be nice and wierd at the same time...doing a whole beat 5/4 signature tune might be good for creativy but not for dancing...i think people need 4/4 in order to dance properly.
Anyway if you want to listen to a complex song i recommend "sting-seven days" AFA i can remember it's 5/4 in verse and turn to 6/8 at the chorus...one of my beloved song of sting,

If i'm not mistaken on the first Shulman album there are couple of tracks with 5/4 signature.
It's rather confusing and not really danceable.
I prefer 4/4 and 3/4. Leaving the odd signatures for experimental stuff.

I think if you make the rhythm well enough you can make any time signature 'dancey'. It's just not done very often, on one hand because it's difficult to da and of course impossible to mix with a 4-4 tune. Will post my 5/4 tune sometime soon, when out hosting company is sorted out. It's dancey in a grinding sort of way (@180 bpm ), but not psytrance, it is dnb.
From Holst 'The Planets', 'Mars' is in 5-4, but not that helpful perhaps. There is a Pink Floyd song, I'm told, which is in 7-4. I hope to do something with a similar beat soon. It's basically 4-4 and 3-4 alternating. I think you're right tho Pavel, it will be more experimental with such time sigs.
Will look out for 'Seven Days', nice one Motorik.

The Pink Floyd song would be Money. Shpongle's ...And the day turned to night has a 7/8 beat. |

Sweet! I've been wanting to know what the Pink Floyd tune was called! All I have is the rhythm and a melody that may or may not be the original.
