It's funny how I still feel better posting this here than anywhere else on the internet, though I'm hardly making psytrance anymore. But as psychedelic EDM evolves from fragile, tentative, and easily classifiable beginnings, I think we have an opportunity for the creation of exquisitely mind-bending, sublimely groovy and endlessly creative dance floor music. Full-on still rocks, but creativity is stunted by sheer overload of new tunes coming out from pros and newbies alike.
When I look back a few years from now on what I've done musically, I want to say that I helped move Psy-EDM away from it's rigidly genre-focused beginnings into a state of creative flux, where the only important things are innovative sound design, psychedelia and groove.
Just my 2 cents. Enjoy the new Psystep tune. Peace out.

Sure, and thanks for the good word.
First and foremost, I'm really digging Bird of Prey these days (amazing psy-breaks/psy-dubstep). I found him by accident looking for "psystep" and was amazed.
I'm also loving Opiuo (parts of the bass you mentioned at 4:35 is definitely a nod to Opiuo). chunkiest, fattest rhythm section right now in EDM.
Kino Oko is getting a lot of plays right now in my house; that sort of groove building and playfulness is ill.
The psytrance greats Logic Bomb, Hux Flux, and Koxbox will always influence my soundscapes, FX, and melodies, and you can hear little bits and pieces of them.
On the dubstep side, oldschool Skream definitely had a large part in the rhythm construction. Simple, no-frills, and groovy with a nice shuffle. Listen to Rutten and you'll pretty much hear this bassline... shhhh!! Also, The Widdler puts the "dub" back into "dubstep" very well, and I like to draw from his ideas.
Bassnectar's genre-bending is inspiring as well. I don't like his newest releases much, but the older albums Mesmerizing the Ultra and Underground Communication were basically on repeat during this tune's writing. It's his music that really made me realize how much swing-quantize was essential in making that slick, shuffling groove.
There are others that usually inspire me (the Zenon guys: Tetrameth, ShadowFX, Sensient, and Moses; some ripping psytrance like Rastaliens, Random, Cosmosis; some techno with incredible groove-building like Extrawelt; and of course always, always, always Shpongle & Simon P) but they aren't as much obvious/direct influences in this particular tune.
Whoa. There's a lot of good music there from plenty of psy/EDM genres. Fuck yeah.

the harmonica was my buddy playing over the same bassline at a lower tempo/different key... he didn't actually know i was recording him. i sped up + pitched it to fit with the C natural minor, then chopped it up so it fits with the tune.
some places it fits REAL nice: 5:54-5:57 turned out wicked. and that final lick at the outro. actually, the original ending featured him laughing when i said 'yo shuttup i'm done recording' but i cut that out Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room. ~Kurt Vonnegut

Thanks! I had tons of fun making it. It wasn't "my type of music" until recently - but I just have much more fun dancing to funky, trippy, deep dubstep than 4-to-the-floor cheesy psytrance these days.
Still love my trance, though Eventually, I would be very happy to mix psytrance into my psystep sets. FUCKYEAH!
