what were these "DJ's" playing that inspired the "Live Acts"??
was it music that they produced themselves? if not, then they would not have been anywhere with out the "live act" (PRODUCER)
DJ's play music that other people make, last i checked.
if these people didnt make music, the DJ would have nothing to play.

Any electronic dance music scene needs both dj's and live acts.
If live acts are so cool and important and better, why this scene is sunk in a total mess without proper labels, festivals that repeat their line up year after year, no record sales, not much innovation in music?
The first thing that died in this scene without the dj's were long sets, we got confined to this 1hr max 3 format of "lives", one after other.
Then diversity, maybe in one festival having 10 live acts is enough but if you go to festivals regularly then you see those same 10 live acts which play the same music, maybe one or two new tracks.
The third casuality were labels, there is no longer the need for release music, people go to festivals for the "live acts", not for listening new music.
New artists also have no chance of expossure (no labels for releases and no dj's to showcase new music on festivals).
And yes, many dj's still buy music or how the hell does beatport, juno and trackit make any money? The sales are low I know, but enought to keep many of those labels running.

unless they made their own stuff on the fly...
yeah bro, all the old techno dj's only played other people music back in 88.
Many producer dj'ed back then but they didn't limited themself to their own music.
Producers can be dj's and is quite preferable to the stupid live acts "performance" in the psytrance scene.
Probably you have never been to a aprty with decent dj's.
there is a reason why they still exist in other electronic scenes.

i was speaking from the roots not 88.
Do you really not know anything about electronic music from that time period and what the dj did for the scene?
Well first off! The electronic scene wasn't so large back then and the dj is who opened the mind to more ideas. you would also need to understand that a good dj can take music that they didn't produce and create their own music but this is something most producers refuse to except as truth. So back in the day, the dj was the one who merged beats from non electronic with electronic music that had not yet developed the concept of beats with their music yet. you should be thankful the dj gave innovation to the scene.
wonder how many "live artist" actually make their music from scratch these days without the use of sample banks, no different than a dj using other peoples music. come now! lets go behind the scene where live acts meet other live acts and trade gigs of sound bites from other live acts so they can produce music. Is it okay that we ignore that both the dj and live act are using the same tools. but thats too much of a reality to face if live act is selling themselves as an original artist.
agree! its much preferable that producers dj versus play pre-made sets. it would be much preferable if events would ban computer use or as a visual with performance art put the monitor the artist is using on the big screen so everyone can actually see their talent. which in most cases would be the live act playing wave files which is no different than a dj.

you couldn't be a meter or so away because the stage was too big and the dancefloor was more than a meter away
and dear Ocelot could it be that you're just mad because psykovsky sweapt the lost theory festival and made huge impact and your set sounded amaterish - not well prepared - puting one good track and then three bad ones. Sorry, but it made me leave the dancefloor, also you had to beg and plea to play...

There is no reason that a proper producer in the psy scene couldn't grab a Launchpad or two & do a 1 hour mash up like Australia's M4SONIC. Sure he does electro house whatever but I'm sure the same concept can be applied to any EDM genre:

He's a classically trained pianist who did mash up like this of some Deadmau5 track, in response to Deadmau5 saying that live EDM is only push play and not real live.
Anyways, since that first clip he was asked to remix some local and international commercial acts in this style and now has a local tour planned, album contract signed with a major label & talks of a USA tour next year.
He openly admits he prefers trance music but it doesn't so as well as this rubbish so he's just doing what makes money. I see nothing wrong with that, I just see it as a method that i'm sure those who have the knowledge & dexterity could use this in our scene for live shows.
It's ate least a bit more than pressing the alt+tab to Facebook.
I doubt it'd apply to much of the neo goa sound but I'm sure full on, prog & the dark psy sounds could make use of it.
I can't believe that this bloke is considered to be original in anywah, I thought this was what the Launchpad etc. was meant for.

Well there is a bunch of people doing stuff like M4SONIC in other EDM scenes. But I have never seen them do a 60 minute liveset. Is it possible to do that the way they do a liveset? Or will you have to use the same sounds over and over again that are loaded into the launchpad (making it a boring set for 60 minutes)? Also would it be possible physically to do that well for an hour? It seems to me it would be more similar to scratching, which is nice for 15 minutes, but there are hardly any scratch djs doing shows for longer than 30 minutes right?

Without DJ's almost no one would ever hear the music made by artists (except on some website page swimming in the sea of millions of other sites). That is a fact!
The debate is idiotic in the sense that artists can not live without DJ's to promote their music and DJ's can't live without the artists music. Simple as that.
A great DJ has special talent to create a great journey with his djing skills and track selection.
A great producer has special talent to create a great journey with his production skills and music creation skills...
So why not to value a producer that can create diferent sets every time he plays, evoluting his own tracks, showcasing unreleased ones and producing great track to track passages?
I think this is very valuable to, even if it's prerecorded, but produced specially for that party and with no faking about it.
Of course the promoters of today's parties with always say this producer will play "Live", they are the ones creating this problem from the start, even when the producer tells them what he is going to do.

It's Alive!
It's in Hebrew, but there are subtitles. It's almost a year old, and I think they have developed it much more since, but it can give you an idea of what can be done.
And there's also Minilogue/Son Kite who do a real live show, and actually jam all their music, including what the release. I know Ableton filmed a documentary about how they work and it should be released later this year. Should be very interesting.
