The whole point is that the scene shifted from a DJ scene to a "live" scene around 1998-2000. It's here you have to look for the real problem.
In the past you had maybe one "live act" and multiple DJ's (In the real good parties only a few DJ's playing long sets).
Nowadays you have 90% "live acts" and a warm up Dj.

Yeah, live acts ruined this scene, starting by making music irrelevant and all about the name.
Dj's dissapeared: no one to buy records, no need for labels, no way to present new music at festivals, same artists booked time and time again.

It was one of the reasons I stopped going to gigs around 2002 except for the odd one.
All the good dj's I knew we're getting maybe 1-2 hours sets, and all these lives acts just playing the same sound for the entire time got tiring on the ears. Then it seemed that parties lost the dynamic of going on a trip and began having he whole same sound for an entire gig or stage.
The scene for me had lost a lot of innovation & seems now frown upon the whole idea of stepping outside of the box sound wise.
It's sad to see, as there was a lot of dynamic in the 90's even from the big names. Now it's only gigs if you produce a certain sound. Disappointing.

Yup for me too. It was around 2002 for me too, which is coincidently when I started getting involved in a dj crew throwing parties and soon noticed I wasn't playing the same music as everyone else and never did since.

without live acts the DJ's will be non-existant, except for the ones that play the top 100's
if live acts dont get booked they will eventually stop making the music. because we all know how well the music actually sells nowadays
the rise of the live acts follows with the decline in people actually buying music
DJ's included
and now comes the onslaught of DJ's commenting about how they buy all the music they play....

*raises hand* I never knew how or where to steal music so just bought or acquired through personal contact from artists I loved and supported (hence, didn't play the same music as everyone else).

That's why there's more responsibility for live acts to play music LIVE and not preset or at least play fresh music unavailable to DJs. Otherwise it's just a DJ set which any DJ could play.

Not true at all. Everybody says that their best party was in GOA in the 90's and it was awesome and they didn't even know where the DJ boot was.
The scene don't depend on Live Acts to exist, but on people willing to have meaningful psychedelic experiences. Some people make the deco, some make the music, and so on...
If all artists died today, I could still throw one thousand parties using only the already released psychedelic trance tunes.

Be patient, it was Traktor y'day, iOS DJing today, in a year or two it'll just be playlist making, and remote DJing, and like full_on said.... the good old days when noone gave a hoot who was playing and where they were playing from.
In the necessity chain above DJ and producer are the engineers, programmers and designers

Amazing how much trouble the OP has caused simply by having a good whinge because he didn't like either the music or the performance of an artist.
I reckon this thread is long dead and should be locked.
