lol unfortunately i've seen this kind of stuff too, disconnected guitars and stuff.
My point was that i do not expect PsyTrance Live Acts to Play "Live".
But When i see Acts that really play at least some parts Live i usually enjoy it.
What We see more and more these days is 100% (Ableton)Live sets.

well, what do you all suggest we no-name electronic musicians do when promoters reach out to us to do a "live" set? should we insist they write "showcase" on the flyer? should we point them in the direction of this thread?
You can be the one to help the scene come to terms a little more with its dirty little secret, and insist that you get billed as a 'showcase' or 'producer set'. It's a high-integrity way of saying "I can't DJ and I'm not much of a performing musician or technician but I can write a great piece of dance music, and here are 8 or 15 examples. Plus I'm honest".
Or you can pretend you're performing live music while your laptop does all the hard work, resulting in a gradual erosion of your self-respect over a period of time as you realise that when your friends ask you "how did it go up there?" and your fans ask you "so how do you work your live set?", you have no honest answer that doesn't reveal your fakery Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering OOOD 5th album 'You Think You Are' - www.is.gd/tobuyoood :: www.OOOD.net www.facebook.com/OOOD.music :: www.soundcloud.com/oood Contact for bookings/mastering - colin@oood.net

Yup. Personal ethics. I've had a couple promoters ask if they could bill me as a Live set as I play some of my original tunes in my sets and I refused.
Respect to the people actually doing shit live, maybe I will join your ranks one day but for now...its more than good enough for me to mix tunes as smoothly as I can manage it and throw some originals in there every now and again.

At least I can Beat-mix and mix harmonic. That's more than 99% psytrance DJs will ever be able to
And hey I can also play real instruments live.
And hey I usually tell the organizers I won't be playing live as they are not willing to pay the full fee and in that case I prefer to play as a DJ and Dj my own tunes.
And hey they write "Live" anyway even though they promise to leave the "Live" out.

The whole point is that the scene shifted from a DJ scene to a "live" scene around 1998-2000. It's here you have to look for the real problem.
In the past you had maybe one "live act" and multiple DJ's (In the real good parties only a few DJ's playing long sets).
Nowadays you have 90% "live acts" and a warm up Dj.
and that was perfect imo ! djs can offer better sets..

Hi.
Mixing multiple tracks; Loops; Adding some fx and playing a synth tune when there is the time. This is as "live" as one can get.
Full Live psy is not possible for one person. Humans have two hands to work. Full live would need many hands... and still I feel it would be impossible to co-ordinate mind and body.
I feel instead of live vs dj. It should be dj vs "live" dj.

few examples of how some producers approached the concept of performing electronic music "LIVE":

Nothing new there. I've seen plenty of EDM acts doing it over the last 20 odd years. Psy trance is so ridiculously eleysium about making "complicated music" with "soooo many layers" that it's "too hard" to do it live which is a load of BS.
I saw a local producer here in Oz in '07 bring his studio gear out and do an exceptionally layered forest set 100% live. It was layered, and get technical. One of the most amazing set I've seen.
Also I'd actually prefer to here an artist make some simpler psychedelic sounds 100% live than to watch them was their hands around to a prerecorded set.
And DJ'ing? Seriously? If you can do grade 3 maths you should easily be able to dj. There's 4 beats to a bar, it's not nuclear physics.
I cannot believe over the last decade with the dj'ing technology that's been available the amount of train wrecking psy dj's. yeah there's plenty of good ones but even Digital DJ by Son Kite & some of Re:Evolution on Flying Rhino had obvious errors.
Really pathetic.
Give me Jeff Mills & a 909 any time over a fake psy showcase!
