Halloween Psyforia ROCKED!

First things first. The Psyforia crew went out of their way to make this event amazing. And, let me tell you, they did a fantastic job. Free demo CD's from Boston DJ's lined the entry way and were given to anyone walking through the door. Bowls of free candy, Juno Reactor posters, and crazy jack-o-lanterns complete with the names "Sonic Beating" and "KRI" made the immediate entry into the venue as enjoyable and exciting as the party itself. Once inside, people were treated to the most inspiring and eye-popping display Boston has seen since Jamin Murphy did up the Phoenix Landing three years ago. And, for that, we all have Bob Trahpek and the Psychedlic Friends Network to thank. As he's done for the past three months - from Quebec to Cambridge - Bob Trahpek went out of his way to bring new, original, and highly effective pieces of artwork into the party space. Following a Halloween theme, he created an atmosphere which resembled both a sophisticated psy-trance party and a middle-school halloween boy/girl dance. The DJ backdrop, created solely for this party, was a massive blacklit jack-o-lantern - mouth wide open in ominous amazement. Foamcore "bats" hung by the handfuls from the rafters, and paper flouro ghost-skulls dangled on the side. ( I swear to God, I saw The Babe in one of those faces.)

But quite possibly, the most impressive piece of the night was Bob's ENORMOUS (5 feet by 3 feet) 3-dimensional Black Widow spider which hung in the rear corner of the room. Eight massive arms, evil-looking jaws, and life-like scuplting which actually startled some of the crew as they attempted to hang the thing. Underneath it, was an equally gigantic flouro spider web created by Marria, George and Alana. It provided the perfect backdrop to Bob's "current masterpiece" and, with Alana's baby spiders inhabiting the web itself, the whole back corner of the room was a place where nobody wanted to be "a fly on the wall."   :-) Meanwhile, Jeff Mission was busy projecting his own version of halloween psychedlia on a well placed screen near the front of the dancefloor and an installation by new artist, Sage, hung in the back and gave everyone a dry flourescent "shower" as they walked through. Needless to say, with three highly talented and established visual artists at the helm, and a host of intelligent and passionate folks to add in ideas and installations - the visual display at this Psyforia may go down in history as the best ever!

But the brilliance didn't stop with the deco. In fact, the deco only inspired the sound crew to do even more than they usually do. With Nick Binary currently in Philadelphia for a conference - Jake, Ammon EP, and the rest of the Sonic Beating staff was put in charge of the sound installation - and, making Nick proud, they came through with FLYING COLORS! Four massive subwoofers, a pair of mid-range "mini-subs", and a pair of high cabinets divided themselves evenly on both sides of the DJ booth. Knowing the party was one for the ages, EP raised the levels of the entire system and made sure the subs didn't simply spill out the low end. No! He made sure the subs GROWLED and MOANED like the tortured ghosts present in the venue. As I heard someone say, "hey Ammon, I'm standing ten feet from the subs and I'm not feeling nauseaus yet! Could you turn them up?" Hyperbole aside, the comment was fitting. For both Lauryn's set and Kri's, the low end has never sounded so rich, so deep, and so powerful pouring from Sonic Beating's soundpump.

And who was going to be put in charge of controlling such a system on such a historic occasion? (After all, this IS the first trance party in the history of The United States where the party happened *and* the Red Sox could be called World Champions.) With such a night, and such a call for music to fit the occassion, the honor was bestowed on none other than TOUCH Samadhi's KRI and Sonic Beating's Lauryn. Lauryn took the decks at 10:00 -- the official "start" of the party and, within thirty minutes, was amped up to music more full-on than I'm used to hearing her play. Progressive lovers walk out now, as by 10:30 Lauryn was busy playing some of the most ripping and blazing full-on psy-trance the venue has ever heard. Track after track, two hours of chaos and dance! She played one of her best sets ever! People were dancing, screaming, and cheering - and as white zombie samples began to pour forth - everyone knew this was going to be a night to remember. The set was impressive, and on any given Friday, could have easily served as the closing set! But tonight was different. Tonight there was another DJ in the house who could tear it up even heavier, go even further, push even harder! If Lauryn was using a swiss-army knife to make a small incision in the space-time continuum, Kri took over and used a Samurai sword to slice the whole thing into pieces! I can think of no other DJ here in the United States (other than possibly Selim) who could have come on after Lauryn's set and raised the bar even further than it had already been raised!

As he has so many times in the past, KRI once again renewed my belief that he is not only the finest full-on DJ here in the United States, but also one of the two or three best full-on DJ's I've ever heard. Tracks never before heard, mixed together with precision, and played in an order perfectly fitting to the star-alligned night that we all enjoyed! If I had to find a difference between he and Lauryn's set, it would be that Lauryn's set included many high-end synth lines that - scorching and seering through the SB Sound Pump - came off as occassionaly abrasive. Kri's set, on the other hand, incorporated very few tracks and samples with such a dominant high-end, and kept the set searching through the depths of basslines and organ groans that suited Halloween to a T. Had Kri not played the way he did, I doubt I would have even noticed the difference! And, from judging by the crowd response to both DJ's - I'm thinking I may have been the ONLY one who noticed.

Within twenty minutes after midnight on October 30th, there was NOBODY outside smoking butts, NOBODY in the bar (save the bartender), and NOBODY "out back" hanging out with Shaggy and Scooby. There was nobody in the foyer long-windedly discussing the 2005 Red Sox (Cabrera and Varitek will stay and there's chance both Scott Kazmir and Carl Pavano will be Sox next year!) and NOBODY was out in their cars having business meetings. Everyone who was there for the party (save the brave and steadfast admission takers) was on that dancefloor getting down to Kri's set.

For the first time in a long time, the crowd was unified as one. Granted, the attendance wasn't as huge as it's been in the past (around 60 or 70 people), but when they ALL got on the dancefloor at once - and stayed their for upwards of an hour straight - it gave me even more reason the believe that KRI has some serious skills!! After a special halloween rum-shot and a few libations from other party-goers, Kri hit even higher levels of full-on mayhem! It was at that time (much like happened the last time Selim blew up Psyforia) I had to retreat off the dancefloor, cower on the benches outside, and start chanting "Son Kite, Son Kite, Son Kite, Son Kite" to myself in the hopes I could come back to a calmer and more centered existence!! I stayed off the dancefloor for the final 30 minutes or so, but could hear the screams of the dancing people on the inside. As each other barrelled out the door, exhausted, it made me wonder who - if anyone - would make it to the end.. But then, as each one WENT BACK, after a quick breath of fresh air, I knew that the whole place would still be packed when the music was stopped at 2:00AM (Boston's ONE AND ONLY real FLAW!)

As the final notes played, the chants of "one more" began erupting from the audience. Ammon EP made the final announcements, but was drowned out by the encore-wanting screamers. Sadly, there would be no encore as the venue owners wanted to party stopped at 2:00! As people stumbled out of the venue, realizing they had just stepped on the cosmic rake and it had hit them in the third eye, the night came to an end. (Thanks to Ammon EP for that one)... Peacefully, (unlike was the case in Boston on October 20/21) people dispersed and the party ended.

That's what I say every time we have a party here in Boston...but such is life...

However, the reviewer wasn't at the afterparty...so technically, things did last longer than just 4 hours...           ~gOa ist nicht nur musik sondern auch eine lebenseinstellung~
