hahaha! A trance party outside in the middle of March in Boston would have to include ice skating on the frozen Charles river and dancing with the polar bears.

The Psyforias outside are pretty special, but we'll probably have to wait until May for one of those. This one should be nice anyways, I'll probably try to be back in Boston for it and I encourage anybody who is in the area to check it out.

Love and Sunshine!

Everyone who came out to see Blue Spectral Monkey play at Psyfora this past Friday knows how much his set rocked! ...for those of you who didn't, well, you missed out. I think this review by Boston's Dave Henshaw says it all.......

-Lauryn

~~~~~~~~~~~
"Perhaps Blue Spectral Monkey has a huge nation-wide following.
Perhaps Binary's new 9000 watt edition of the Sonic Beating PA mailed out some extra invitations that nobody knew about.
Perhaps there was some confusion and people thought this could be the "last" Psyforia. Or perhaps Bob Traphek was spreading the word about his big unveiling up on the North Shore to people Boston had never met....
Whatever the case, for whatever reason, and by whatever powers-that-be; this last Psyforia was the biggest, most successful, and one of the most enjoyable in the storied 18 month history of this event. Rivaling even some of the outdoor versions from this past summer, the party rocked and swayed. Packed shoulder to shoulder inside the enclosure of a 9000 watt sound system and five absolutely amazing tapestries; the crowd listened to the craftiness of three outstanding DJ's and (by night's end) wanted more. We never got an accurrate count, by I would estimate at least 150 people walked through the door into the Hall that night, many of whom found the dancefloor so full they had to enjoy the music from the back room and/or outside!
Of the many special events we were treated to at this party, none could have been more so than the unveiling of Bob Traphek's brand new tapestries. Months upon months upon months of diligent and intense work - finally ready to be shown. It was an honor to have them at this Psyforia. Five massive pieces of canvas which covered two entire walls of the venue. And was I not the ONLY one staring into the eye of that raven who was hung behind the DJ booth? We can all only hope these tapestries come out again for future events both here and in NYC.
With the visuals provided on a silver platter by Mr. Traphek, Leonid's brand-new "mini-screen", and the resident deco crew; it was time for the music to begin. Blue Spectral Monkey opened with a 70 minutes of atmospheric downtempo and chill-out... The crew was still decorating, the crowd was still just arriving and it was the perfect music for the time. It kept people (myself especially) from getting too frustrated and too anxious before the party. The last twenty minutes of any set-up can be a gut-wrenching time, but BSM's music helped the whole crew get it together and have the place in tip-top shape by 9:30.
After a solid progressive set by a local scando-freak, Lauryn was ready to take the decks at 11:00. By this time, the crowd had swelled to a pretty solid number. People had come in, taken off their coats, greeted their friends, grabbed a few beers, and were ready to dance. And who better than to get them all moving than the one most responsible for organizing Blue Spectral Monkey's trip north? Lauryn created the perfect bridge between the scando-progressive sound that greeted people and the full-on insanity they were going to be hearing at midnight. The tracks were clear and crisp, the mixing was solid, and the whole set had an upward movement to it that took people away from the bopping grooves and into a more complete bodily dance. Temperatures elevated, odors arose, beers weer consumed, speeches were made, cigarettes were smoked, and when all was said and done - Blue Spectral Monkey took the headphones and plugged them in before ! a dancefloor of well over 100 people... Needless to say, it was one of the best sets I've heard Lauryn play in quite some time...
With Christian now selecting and mixing the tracks, the place was electric! Bottles were breaking on the floor and in the trash can, screams came forth from the crowd, people were running their hands through the string-art and shaking the entire structure. The room felt like it was either going to be swallowed by the clay tiled floor, or it was going to explode altogether! (It was at this point where I ran for cover and went outside to enjoy a cigarette... And where I talked to Lee about snowboarding and how to use your front foot at the "mast of the sialboat.")
Blue Spectral Monkey continued the play the style which has made him such a favorite around the country. Both a talented visual artist (who designed the flyers for this event and was showing some full-color prints of his work by the entry table) and a skilled DJ. Christian (aka BSM) has been an honored guest here in Boston on many different occassions. He's played at all the major festivals here in the States and he and partner Kri will be responsible for throwing Touch Samahdi's annual outdoor festival in North Carolina this coming July. Pointing to one of his CD's with a copywrite date of 1997, Christian said to me "Here's when the addiction all began! It's both an addiction and a passion I guess." Seven years for Christian, and in that time he's played a major role in creating and developing the close-knit and interconnected network which all of us here on the East Coast are so proud to be a part of. He's played in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburg, the Carolinas, Texas, California... even internationally! We can assume he's only getting stronger with time and will continue to propgate and spread the sounds of Touch Samadhi and the Asheville, NC scene all over the country...
As the mayhem continued on the dancefloor, I found myself at the back of the room, trying to either watch from the outside or, at the very least, stay clear of tripping people! Like I said, the place was as PACKED as it's ever been and all I could do was chill in the back, watch it unfold, and have conversations with those tired from dancing so hard... Hey, someone's gotta maintain order!!
When the lights finally went on at 2:00, NOBODY wanted to leave the dancefloor. Nobody wanted to have their full-on psychedelic trance IV forcibly removed from their arms.. In fact, some people even stayed around hoping that Blue Spectral Monkey's "public service announcement" was nothing more than an introduction to the next hour of his set! Sadly, though, the venue owners ushered everyone out by 2:15 and by 3:00, the place looked axactly like it did 9 hours before..
Anyone who liked Blue Spectral Monkey's intensity is going to love next month! April 16th, Psyforia is proud to host an opening set from Josie, and middle of the night set by Sonic-Beating's braintrust/founder and propagator Nick Binary, and a special closing set delivered from "parts unknown" by the "Authority of Full-ON psy-trance" himself - SELIM!!! Be prepared to hit the dancefloor and either spontaneously combust or find yourself cowering in fear somewhere by the parking lot!!"
