spacey electronic music will never die. from tangerine dream and hillage, to ozrics, to shpongle and into the future. smaller definitions of it like psychill or psy-dub may come and go but it's only one part of a massive, integrated musical style that recycles and evolves simultaneously.

the combination of gilmour's name with the orb is going to put ambient music on the map for a short while. hope the orb are still up to it!

p.s. first post here. hello isra ambient forum.

So very true Neil... It's the whole tired genre debate again.

There's still loads of quality music being produced, even if it does drown a bit in a sea of mediocrity, but I'm sure our hearts, minds and ears will have plenty to be amazed by in the years to come

I'm a huge fan of Myriads by the way, thanks for that one Neil!           www.soundcloud.com/vonoom | www.vonoom.bandcamp.com | www.facebook.com/vonoom | www.flikflakfamily.com

Oh man, it is? I just crawled out from under a rock to release my new album and then discovered that "Psychill is dead". Guess there is no sense in putting it out now. Time to bury it in the backyard.

ooh bad idea...you never know what's buried in your backyard.

you might find an old 8bit, mono akai sampler that's been chopped up by a fidelity frustrated electronic musician.

I found myself feeling the same way as OP lately but figured it was me that changed, and not the genre. but upon further consideration, I do think "psychill" as defined by OP has indeed either gone downhill or deviated too far from what it was in early 2000's to still be called the same genre (psychill or whatever).

this isn't a bad thing, better it change and expand then just remain stagnant... *cough*PSYTRANCE*cough*.... Soon it will just be "music."

I'm kind of struggling with the music I'm creating now....5 years ago all I wanted to do was make "psychill" music. Now, though, its passé and the music I'm creating is nothing like ott, shpongle, entheo, shulman, etc at ALL. if you listen you can hear some elements of it, but really its just "electronic music" or "fusion."

oh well, it was a great mini-genre while it lasted           http://soundcloud.com/rob-vector

some ppl here don't read too well.

of course i listen to other stuff that is chilled and psychadelic. i listened to electronic downtempo music since i found hawkwind and then gong and the hillage and then rainbow dome music. that was way before i found acid, techno &trance.

to quote myself: "by psychill i mean the overproduced tip/shpongle/ott/shulman kinda stuff that probably got most of us here."

have you heard anything in the caliber of the albums i mentioned in the same vain in the last 5 years? I haven't.

the last dark room beat comp from aleph zero is fuckin psychedelic- but your average shpongle head won't be able to understand most of it i figure. bohren und der club of gore will take you to another reality in 5 seconds but most here won't call it psychill...

that psychill is dead. or at least starting to smell very bad indeed...

Bom*shankar, I'm pretty much with you on this. In my opinion most of the things that fall under that category of Shpongle, Ott and stuff in the last few years are quite recycled and boring, even the last two Shpongle albums ( and I'm a big twisted fan ).

I guess that one of the problems is that some artists are trying to sound like Shpongle, Ott etc.

But in this turf, we did get 3 amazing albums in the last 5 years in my opinion, Ott's Skylon, Hallucinogen in Dub live and Shulman's fourth album.

Really love those 3.

And I also agree with you about Aleph Zero.
Some of their stuff is considered Psychill, but I personally wouldn't call it Psychill. It goes far beyond. . .

So, there is plenty of psychedelic music out there, but I agree, in the turf you are referring to, things are dry and not that creative for quite some time now, but like I said, sometimes something good comes up.

I don't really mind that the original narrow spectrum of "psychill" has fallen out of favor with many people and dried up. It got to the point where everything seemed derivative. The best albums are still great to listen to, and the best aspects that particular style have been absorbed by other ambient and chillout styles. If anything it's just evolution of the style. Which is a very good thing. I've watched other styles of music I love evolve from a very creative scene into cookie cutter formulas that sound no different from when the "scene" kind of gelled and stagnated ten years earlier. Quite sad, really.

I saturated my needs for psychedelic chillout a while back. Not even new Ultimae release excite me. And looking back, a lot sounds the same. I guess my musical taste simply moved on again. Maybe it is the same for you?

i didn't make much of it. i didnt even buy it. i listened to it few times and it was just too much of everything. its good stuff, but i had anough of this, if you know what i mean. i quite liked the last younger brother album, though. good music and a couple of very very good trax there.

for me (in a particular oeder):
1. shulman- in search of a meaningful moment
2. tip- mystical experiences
3. shpongle- are u shpongled?

Well, on that I have to disagree.

In my opinion, the stuff your are talking about Bom*shankar and the stuff Ultimae release are two very different things.

Ultimae always pleases me. Everything they releaes is wonderful !

So far they never disappointed me.

Cheers !
