if you listen to a track/mix/stream when you're in the middle of a heroic trip and say "holy shit, this is the most amazing music i could have ever imagined and i think it was written by beings from another dimension who are tapping into my brain right now and communicating to me the history and future of the galaxy" then you know its psychill.
i don't think there could be any real definition or borders drawn...you just know it when you hear it...when you're tripping.

I don't consider myself part of any 'scene'. I hate 'scenes'. They tend to be insular, inward-looking and a bit conservative. Not to mention restrictive. Look at the shit Younger Brother are getting for daring to make a record which flouts the rules of the 'scene'.

I play 95% of my gigs in the USA where psytrance is comparatively non-existent. At least as far as I can see - I'm sure some of the American forum members will put me straight on that.
I share stages with dubstep artists, hip hop artists, jam bands, DJs, 'psychill' artists and never does any controversy arise regarding genres or styles.
I recently read a review of my new album 'Mir' on a dubstep blog where the reviewer described me as one of a new wave of dubstep producers. O rly?

I'm very happy if you like what I do but I'm really just trying to please myself. I don't set out to make music in any particular style - I'm just describing the shapes I hear in my head.
That isn't to deride people who make psy-trance or drum'n'bass or house or techno or any style of music with specific style markers - each to his/her own. They're describing the shapes they see and deriving additional pleasure from a shared aesthetic.
And I'm sure if categorising pieces of music is your thing you can find a compartment to fit me into. If doing so improves your listening experience then that is a good thing.
It's just not something I identify with or have any need for. To me it's a bit like religion: arbitrary, unnecessary and divisive. |

Thank you all for your replies! Now I at least feel like being understood. I know that some artists just love to blur borders. Hey, it's their holy right.
I like some of the answers and I'm looking forward to some more. For me genres and labels are like markers on the map. I'm aware that map is not a territory but for me this whole psychill thing is a total mess and I just don't know what "psychill" means. It looks that it doesn't mean anything. So why to use this term?
I'm a zodiacal Virgo, so I like to order things, to label them. It's just natural to me. It's okay to think that it's a dead-end way. |

You just answered your own question.

Indeed. Much less confusing to just call it 'music'. |

wow, do i really sound like that much of a douche? i'm sorry....
on a slightly less zealous note, I would say that the term "psychill" is more of an implication of where the artist has come from. its someone familiar with the psychedelic circuit who makes trippy music that isn't trance or any other rigidly defined form of dance music. there's the "slow trance" variety of psychill, but also I would say that a big part of "psychill" is fusion. borrowing sounds, modes, themes, etc from various types of music and making them flow together.
OP might also get some good info out of these threads:

Ott wins the thread. Bonus points for the religion snark
And yeah - psytrance is relatively non existant in the USA - smaller, more family vibe. Let's keep it that way!

borders could only lie on the upper end, on the lower end possibilities are micro-infinite.
dream of hearing the likes of biosphere and gas in a psychedelic chillout space. those lucky enough to goto ozora this year...
the space is really what it's about, the chillout is the post-party experience, and the experience to those who just choose to chill.

Maybe that's it! Maybe I don't get psychill because what I love about trance music is mostly absent in psychill scene.
That is psy for me what has "trance" component. Maybe I just expect something different when I've turned to psychill.
At least I know where I stand |

Mystical atmosphere and seriousness, I think. |
