Hi people out there. This year, so far, I've been to 3 different parties in 3 different venues, all of them featuring different artists and DJs. But they had 2 things in common: the name "psychedelic trance party" printed on the fliers and the fluo deco.

Let me tell you how they went:

the first one was clearly a full-on one. You might say that all DJs and live acts had a sort of a silent agreement of only playing different tracks, but all them full-on. The crowd was mixed, but you could see that the kids in Nike and Adidas were in the right place, while the guys in tye-dye felt like "what am I doing here?"

the second one was quite the opposite from the first one. It was a Goa party, very melodic, everybody smiling and all. You could see again a silent "Goa Association" pact among DJs and artists. In this party the kids above were enjoying so much the etheral effects and goa riffs, but the hippies - Gosh! - they were having the party of their lives.

the third one was more of a minimal-progressive, sometimes the crowd would shout in ecstasy but most times the floor was kind of looking like a chill-out tent. Again, the people behind the decks had a sort of agreeement, everybody playing XV Kilist-style tracks. In this one, the Nike kids were surely feeling like "my, it's a ambient party" lol.

My point here is that these parties were completely different from one another. But you couldn't realise this until you were inside the club...after you had paid 50 bucks for ticket. So, I think that if it was clear that the first party was a full-on one, the second a Goa and the third a minimal/prog ones I would know where to go and wouldn't feel frustrated in two of them (it is clear that I favor Goa).

You guys must note that I am not telling that one party was better than the other two ones. All of them were well organized, had very good vibes and were worth the price.

But they were not for the same crowd, I mean. I think that psychedelic is not a sole genre anymore and producers and artists should make it clear what they are doing.

Yes, a division. A name division, at least. Divided, but remainig together.
I don't know what sort of name we should give, but we could make use of the current ones. Oh sure, someone may say it's unnecessary or foolish, but we must remember that trance was early known as progressive house (the ones with 80's house compilation may check this), and now it's an independent scene, a very strong one.

And I think it would make the scene stronger. Take my example: I don't go out trancing anymore as I did before. Main reason is that I don't know what I am paying for. So better go out to a pub, have some drinks and all the rest. But if I knew that a "psychedelic trance party" meant "Goa trance party" was around, surely I would go gladly.

And I am sure that has happened to everybody here, so I'd like to know what you guys think about this.

I guess that's why people put the DJ/live-act line-up on the flyers, so that people who know a little about the music can judge what sort of party it will be. If you got to a party where everyone playing is unknown, you are kind of taking a leap into the unknown, but if you see two minimal artists on the line-up alongside a few names you've never seen before, it's a fair bet you won't be hearing a load of Goa tracks.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Erm, well, my problem would be that my ideal party has a bit of everything. A couple of minimal DJs, a couple of progressive DJs, a couple of full-on DJs.. or, preferably, the lineup full of DJs who are capable of playing progressive or full-on and knowing when and how to play what.. I feel just as unfulfilled from going to an all full-on party as I do going to an all progressive party.

So in Colin's example I'd go along to the party -hoping- to hear some full-on tracks. ;-)

Generally, the best way to know what kind of party it's going to be is by asking the organizers - they usually know these things. In case you know what type of music the party organizers usually play in their parties, it's a safe bet that they'll still keep it up. If not, you should look at the bigger names in the lineup and decide if they are to your taste, or just ask someone who knows these things well enough. And there is usually a phone number on the flyer for these kinds of querries on the day of the party.           http://www.myspace.com/Hooloovoo222

hey traveller, I meant no disrespect towards Adidas or Nike (actually I am an Adidar lover, I think it is very classy). I just wanted to show the difference among the various crowds gathered in these parties.

Well, I have just bought a CD with a Shiva in the cover, thought it was sort of melodic trance and to my (no) surprise, it's banging full-on. That's one of the reasons I've stopped buying CDs - just like going to parties...don't know what I will get.

And Kaz, it's sort of complicated asking party crews what sort of sound they will throw. Based on the line-up it's easy to discover previously what it's going to@be, but most parties have a mix of styles - with one predominating over the the others.

I came with an idea, just would like to tell you guys.

We could call full-on the sort of sound GMS are doing - I think it all comes to the bassline, theirs not a rhythmical one.
Goa is what some guys are doing nowadays, and again the bassline is distinct - throttling I think, with new and old etheral sound effects. I was thinking about Trashlords.
Tech-trance is a genre of its own. And curiously it meshed very well with Goa in the second party I told you guys about, a DJ played the whole Platform CD, very very good.
Well, I've seen some flyers telling that they are not going to play full-on, only progressive. And I think it's the first attempt to make things clear about this mess. Now here my favorite is Noma.
And minimal I don't know, but actually I've been to a huge festival where a lot of minimal artists just emptied the dance floor. Everybody expecting thum-thum-thum and they giving thum-plac-plac-thum. lol. No disrespect meant here too, it's just what really happened.

Love and Peace
