I am sure we all been told that (in an ignorant understanding) that Trance is not live, its computer music while _____ is instrumental.
Lets take Psychedelic rock for example. Can instrumental music be more psychedelic than electronic? In which way can one reach the highest psychedelic level?
Psy rock (Dream Theatre?) sound just stereophonic to me and far from being shivering as Trance; but I am not a rock expert.

well i used to listen to alot of grateful dead and phish (doors did this too and many more) and they are surely very psychedelic. in their live shows, they used to take a 5-6min songs and play them for about 30-40 min sometimes... the songs would lose all shape in the middle and become an improvised (each time very diffrent then the other) psychedelic mish mosh.... very cool and 109% trippy. then at some point when they decided they brought it back to its recognized shape and finished it off to go on to the next one...
pink floyd never did this - their music sounded very much in their live shows as it did on their cd's - but was a psychedelic experience because of the audio/visual aspect of the live shows (lasers, lights, stages, etc)
there is something to be said about the abiliy and the freedorm of 4 band players versus 1 person playing off a laptop. there is a topic here about how many artists are doing real lives and people did mention some that alter their tracks radically from what u hear on the cd to what u see at the show.
then again, the trance scene is aimed mainly today to make you dance and not much more then that.
im not sure if you can really compare which is more what.. mainly my question is why to compare even?          "On the other hand, you have different fingers."

I do not think so. We all listen to Trance way more than we dance to. Aren't we? I know I am. If trance was made mainly to be danced, artist would have dun in les complicated with les effort...

I have to disagree, Pink Floyd's early live shows with Syd Barrett comprised of some extended versions of their tracks. Interstellar Overdrive was nearly 10mins on record, and there were live versions approaching half an hour on occaision. For sure after he left, things changed           Turn On, Tune In, Trance Out!!!

Dream Theater is progressive metal and IMO the term psychedelic is not applied to their music (but I like very much their music, specially their early works).

I can say that "Yes" is very psychedelic, also Rick Wakeman is another example of psychedelic artist.

Try the "Yes" album "Tales from Topographic Oceans", this it's a double CD with only 4 tracks (each track over 20 minutes). This is HIGHLY recommended for psychedelic experiences.

Eloy also I can say. One of my favorite psy rock bands for sure.

To your question Nathan if is more psy the instrumental or the electronic
I believe psy music is the basis and we can create it from instruments or electronic.
Both of them is psychedelic if we want to.

Rick Wakeman is psychedelic? i do not see anything psy in his music; in fact he is to soft & fluffy. His music is far from my taste, but every album by him, based on/is a story with concept and that is gr8!

"The Division Bell" is by far the most Psy instrumental creation ever. Note the panning, reverbs and delays of sounds.

I would say that electronic trance music is also "instrumental" in the sense that there are hardly any lyrics in most tracks!!

More over instruments like computers, keyboards etc are used to make trance music, there is essentially no difference between the two:)

What do other people think?
