After attempting higher BPM psy tunes for the past couple months I decided to take a foray into lower BPM psybient/chillout and I had a great time making this track - refreshing to get out of the KBBB 16th note mindset for a bit.

Bass is done with Omnisphere (synth'd not sampled), as are most of the leads (first one that comes in is in Albino3 however).

Percussion is all done with Stylus RMX

Kicks are sampled from Tsabeat and tweaked a bit

FX are all done with Operator.

Looking for criticism on general feel of the songs buildup as well as technical feedback. Bass sounds good on my monitors and headphones but last time I A/B'd the track in my car the bass got distorted so I cut more from the low end with a sharper filter (ableton's EQ3 48 DB set to ~40 if I remember correctly)

cheers

Edit - sigh, something messed up somewhere, there are a couple clicks in the beginning and a pad missing on the soundcloud version, reuploading now...           If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

hey,
I really like the precussive groove on this song.. I was listening the whole weekend to shpongle's older stuff. (i never really heard him before, but i'll see him live in a show next week so i thought lets hear what the rave is all about) and your song almost compares to his style. maybe only because thats all i've been listening to recently.

Your percussion is real good but try to take some inspiration from spongle. he's a genuis when it comes to that.

I like the vibe very much (describe as "dreamy"). i like the music. almost DUB-ish, very nice mellow vibe. catchy +1

imo.,the bass fades-in too long in the build-up. at the start i get accustomed to it and adjust my gain and before long it is too loud.. not so serious problem

quality not bad, not totally perfect,, just good-ish

what monitors do you use?
this is the 2nd song of yours that i thought was a little bit heavy on the bass on my monitors.

ps. the song im working on now also has a tweaked tsabeat kick.. i can;t really tell which one of them you tweaked here.

Thanks to both of you - yes I too noticed the bass problem with this song in particular, I can't play it over half volume in my car, yet the bass sounds fine in my monitors and in my headphones - definitely something I have to work on - I'm not sure if I need to cut more from the low end or what.

I use Tapco S8 monitors - mid-range, not too expensive but not super shit either...kind of sucks though, I can never put them above half volume or I'm sure I would annihilate my neighbors sanity lol

I was indeed taking a lot of inspiration from twisted, particularly shpongle/ott type dub-bass...i'm very pleased that you made even a little bit of a comparison though my music is very novice to my ears still

I think all I really did with the kick was EQ a bit of the mid-range out and add a very tiny ammt of reverb/delay on send

I must say, I am kind of cheating when it comes to percussion using Stylus but as long as the results are good I don't really care too much - definitely need to learn how to program good percussion manually at some point.

i had a quick google on the tapco s8,, they look pretty decent. i didn't find a comprehensive review, but i was looking to see if anyone mentioned a light low-end. which could explain way you might push the low-end to compensate. but no answer for you. When i got my monitors ,i listened for many hours, what i consider, good music, to hear what flat loudness should sound like on them.

you say you have a sharp HP on 40hz already..
I tell ya, somtimes i do a steep HP and all of a sudden i get a NASTY RESONANCE ROUND 60-100hz.. i take the HP off and it sounds right again.. wish i knew. someone explained on a thread the other day about linear EQ and phasing on the low-end, i didn't really understand.
anyway, in theory that cut is to remove inaudible freqs and save headroom (and maybe to tighten bass up a tiny bit),, so unless your car has a subwoofer that can reproduce lower than 40, it should not be a major issue. IM(novice)O.

im unfamiliar with stylus, but i gather you did not do all the percussion programming yourself.. no matter it fits alright.

sure, it still sound a bit novice. but only with a slight margin.. i think your sound will get lots better in short time and then you will sound great with pro-mastering.
