an Australian group called Hired Goonz have been performing in surround sound at parties over here for about a year. The first time they did it they got a university professor to help them setup the sound system, but one of them has studied sound art at uni, so he can do it himself after seeing it done that one time. Hardly ever happens though - it's a bit of a pain for the party organisers
you can check out their sounds on the Gi'iwa Productions label. I believe they have an album coming out sometime next year as a DVD in 5.1 surround
new Hadal Drop album on the way
if you don't have the last one get in touch |

I have this on my mind for quite some time, and my opinion is that a 5.1 system would best fit to a chill-out/ambient live... 4 sure trance will kick ass as well if well produced, but imagine being in the middle of a tottally spaced out soundscape that chills your spine....Wowaweewa, as borat would say...

I think 5.1 works well for films, but not so well for music.
In film you have a visual reference for the direction a sound is coming from and character expression to warn you of any rumbling noises caused by approaching dinosaurs or something similar.
With music when you have something panning around 5 speakers it is not quite as defined as it is between 2. It just sounds like a slower, weaker movement. The only advantage of extra speakers for music is you can create a wider mix and avoid sound cluttering by spreading out sounds.
Also when I have heard psy trance on multi speaker systems, unless I've been in the pinpoint centre of the speaker area, I hear the top end of the kick drum several times over in the space of about 250ms, which takes out the overall energy of the kick and makes the rhythm less defined.
I think using delay tactics to trick your ears into thinking the sound is coming from different directions is a much more effective and reliable alternative. |

I made a beautiful :-D paint drawing of a setup i think will work in a club. This way, the elements that need to be punchy have their own speakers in front, and the trippy stuff can be panned from front to back.

it can sound nice, making some FX's in breaks or just FX's all over the track, in 5.1
but nothing more i think... but.. who knows
