Is psy-trance more similar to rock music than other forms of dance music?
I’ve been thinking a bit about this and psy trance is quite unusual compared to most other forms of dance music. Its generally CD based, not vinyl, for a start. But one things that does really separate psy trance is that it is becoming increasingly artist orientated. Most other sorts of dance music tend to be 12” based with a number of producers putting out lots of different tracks under different names and it is the DJ who is the big draw at events.
However, Psy trance is unusual in that it is artist who are the big attractions, and this is becoming increasingly so. If you look at any of the summer festivals – it’s is the “live” (ahem…) acts that are the main attractions and the DJs are almost incidental. I’d say that this has become increasingly the case over the last few years. There are very few new DJs coming through with the pulling power that maybe Mark Allen or Tristan had a few years ago. So festival bills look more and more like rock bills (but obviously different names & music…).
I think that this similarity to rock music has helped it develop in many parts of the world where other sorts of dance music may not have taken off. Most people can buy CDs or download music from the internet – well a lot more than can get to a record store to buy 12”s – and so its far more accessible.
But another side of this is that everyone expects to hear the “big” tunes that they have at home when they go to party – a lot more so than say a techno or house night. Perhaps this is why it is harder for new DJs to carve out their own unique style?
I’d be curious to hear what you think.

I think there are a lot of DJ's out there, but its really the artists which make this scene worthwhile.

well, i know that i love watching the super rock nights on mtv. i also love watching rock bands perform live...if they're any good. i don't like pop music and if i buy anything other than trance, it will most probably be rock music. so i think there is a lot of similarities between rock and psytrance. i've never actually seen any other form of music that can "rock" a dance floor as much as rock and psytrance and it's maybe because of this that it's doing so well in this country. in fact, 90% of the people i know that goes to trance parties, are into rock music as well. it's just a more mature, less mainstream, more bad-ass type of sound which we just can't get enough of. |

maybe because it's NOT dance music?
sure one can dance to it.. and in the past (and today also in balet) people danced to classical music.. but that's not what's it for.

One day, after some philosophy, a girl told me that good psytrance parties are equivalent to non-commercial rock parties, but with more girls...
Both crowds somehow know and like the music they're gonna listen too, in both parties you'll see respect, drugs, euphory and happiness, and in these parties you'll not see fights.
Maybe she's right... God bless the girls...
Respect!

hay john
what u broth up here is an intersting thing..i would divide it to a few point's ..
trance had been divelop'd in many way's , in many diferent contry's , in every plais difrent kind's of music that ppl grow up on ..
in israel as i know , most of the ppl that r makiing trance music r coming from the rock seen wich was verey big here in the 90's, i know i come from there and lot's of my frind's as well, u can hear this infloenses in many trance act's...that's whay i think we make more full on music , it is close to rock music imh, i wark as a light and sound injeneer as well and i love it , when im ther it's only ROCK N ROLL .
but take the progresive trance ( and i meen real progresive , somthing that alot of ppl confuse with i dont know what..the kind of music that doesnt go more then 135/6 bpm...)this music i think is much more similer to house then to rock . and it's coming more from europe then from here ...much more ...
this day's the trance hade progres'd alot and crosd many border's , the trance maker's r exploring the globe and getting new infloenses couse of this ..the club's have become somthing that at list here in israel i dont remember it going like this , many club's with psy party's every weekend .
for me as some one who's making music , all of this thing's change my way's , im doing thing's in a diferent way then i would do them 5/6 year's ago.
to salm it up , this day's trance music sound's to me more like ......trance music....it's just a nother still of music along with rock, house , techno, pop, latin and what ever...
well that's what i think..
