best advice i got is forget about the feeling of having to learn before you can do it. Just keep making tracks and you will teach yourself even if the first 30 are crap. Just keep going no matter what. Spend several hours a day if nothing else making sounds. it will eventually become an extension of you.

Lately I've been starting to think this isn't the best way to go about things. It's a good way if you're starting and want to make a copy of a sound. For me, I just choose to create a kbbb pattern and free-form from there. I insert plug-ins, tweak in a non specific way, apply effects and see what they do, and I've been able to come up with some pretty neat sounds. I just gotta work on writing melodies a lot more.
I think if you are smiling while doing it, you're doing it right and that's the only rule you should go by. So, to each his own.
