Huge topic!
I think this one has to run for years!

A minimal music theory is necessary to put your inspiration out of your brain, the right way is to learn what you need, as if you have an idea, you can run straight to your favorite sequencer before it goes away! but if someone have a lot of theory, and no inspiration,it's absolutly unusefull! Learning to practise an instrument is very helpfull to have a physical contact with the music.

Off course you are one of those with a musical education background!

But you can notice that apart from the list I also said:
"and many others"
That would definelty include you mate.

No Neville - that isn't true.

I have absolutely no musical education background whatsoever. All I know is what I taught myself through experimentation.

As far as I know, Simon is entirely self-taught musically and technically.

As I said before, a lot of this thread is just uninformed guesswork.

Wow!
I'm impressed.......
Oops I suppose I was totally wrong then.
Cool - so in short time I'll be the only trance producer who knows music theory (after i learn that) -
Well, not the only one cause a couple of firmds of mine ftom Malta have music theory too and they will release their first album soon in Brasil!

Anyone knows if Space cat was musically educated?
Just curious...

Well Ott and Simon Posford both have degrees in classical composition so I expect Space Cat composes four-part counterpoint in the bath, having studied Musicology at the Sorbonne.

Hold on Colin I'm getting confused here.
OTT said that himself and Simon have no musical backgroung education and you are saying that they do!
What's going on?
Who is right?

What you said regarding the 3 artists makes more sense to me but.....

Forget it man. I was joking; read Ott's post.

Serves me right (again!) for trying to use sarcastic humour here... I was trying to make the same point that Ott was - everyone assumes that just because they like someone's music, that artist must have formal training in it. It's just guesswork, and in more cases than not it's untrue, too.           Mastering - http://mastering.OOOD.net :: www.is.gd/mastering

Well, 4 years of clasical piano music theory and composition, 4 years of jazz drums, some bass and guitar skills.

and yah, i can write 8 point contrapunktus variations and free scale jazz improvs, but then I don't produce trance.

anyway, my clasical training did help me with DJing as i understand the whole idea of key mixing (and the Quinta circle that allowes you to mix not only same key tunes but also Dominant-Sept-key tunes and paralel minor key tunes) and the idea of beats and progress within the structure.           Kinetic Honda GmbH, Worldwide Supliers of Quality noise.

Exactly. Anybody can create music. At its most basic level everyone can open their mouths and make a sound, or clap their hands in time with a rhythm. Surely the definition of the word 'musician' is someone who engages in musical practise.....?

I really do think that one of the biggest myths about music is that it's some kind of elite means of expression, restricted only to those just out of the Royal College or something which, as has been demonstrated by some of the posts on this thread, is complete and utter rubbish. We are all musicians, whether we know it or not. It's not in the training. It's in the experience, whatever form that takes. I'm of the opinion that music is an in-built human phenomena, a natural means of collective as well as individual expression and understanding that has the capacity to transcend boundaries of culture, age etc simply because it's there, deep down in all of us.

So get out there....clap your hands, pick up a drum, sing a favourite song, tweak your synth....

Love and Peace 3;~

ur right in a way floaty... but, its like an aouthor.. almost annybody can wright a book ... but obviusly not in the same levels... same with music, but ppl need to understand that its alot more than just wrighting a nice melody or a nice drum beat or wotever... its about the sound its self and about the production and alot more things that musicians do in there project ofcourse not only in trance.
i mean for exemple matching the melody to the right sound or mixing all the sounds together so evrything is like one piece.... just one of the things that musicians should do in my opinion, so musician dont have to be some one that know notes or something like some ppl think as matter of fact like i thought long time ago
