This is the kind of argument that has raged for years in musicological circles RE. real music, what constitutes an 'authentic' musician, 'education' versus experience etc. It all comes down to bullshit musical hierarchies at the end of the day, in the same way many classicists poo-pooed things like rock and roll, or anything from the burgeoning music concrete phenomena in the 1950's for example.
I was classically trained throughout most of my childhood, as were many of my peers growing up and to this day some of the most talentless, musically bigoted people I have ever met were also those who were, on paper, the most qualified.
I am grateful that I can read music. I am also grateful that I can (badly) score/write music because some of my own little creations require it. However I have to say that I gradually started to find that kind of education very limiting on a whole range of levels. By learning a set pattern, a set of rules, it's often very hard to find your own voice, or have the balls to experiment outside the regimen or system.
Some of the most gifted musicians/producers I know or listen to are not trained in the traditional way that I was and MORE POWER TO THEM… because I do think in many ways they can be a lot more free, less entrained.
Music is a universal way of communicating and understanding, it speaks in as many languages as there are people able to hear it. Education is also something that comes in many forms, experience being the most powerful in my opinion. If the music is written from the heart, or in some way speaks to an audience, then who are we to say anything more about it?

Blimey, that was a rant and a half.

What I was trying to say, in a nutshell, was....if you like what they create, who cares how or what they play??

I agree with floatyhippyflower...
The point of every musician is to give you his feeling and his thoughts and doesn't matter how he will do..But i cant say musician any kid who is sitting in his pc and trying to guess the notes with his mouse and making music..This is not composition its a pc game...But the real owner of this disaster of electronic music responsible are only the record labels who release trax only to complete their compilations..Do u try to check how many cd's has released in 2004??
its about 300++ ...HEHEHE astronomical..
This is my poor opinion and not something that i m trying to make the others to believe.

Best artists/Groups for me as musicians and guys who knows a lot of what they do are:

Juno Reactor
Hallucinogen
Ott
Dado
Many of twisted records
and many more that i cant think right now..
Ecxuse if i forgot other big names..
I m sure they are exxist..
Anyway keep trying..
Fingax
Cosmic Station

None of the musicians I know have any kind of formal training.

I think maybe people want to believe that their favourite artists have had a formal musical training...

u know simon postford dont you?

actualy he's one of my favourites..

Although i m aware it couldnt be musical background but for shure soundaudio engeeniering..

wich one are we talking about? or is just any education?

Anyway, i think anyone dosent need any "musical" education, to make music, but there are some basic things\rules that is convenient to know to get good sound. this knoledge can be shared if ur lucky to get someone to tell you. My case i always had dificulties finding people to teach or help with this kind of tips, and lots of people just dont say anithing. wich i think is bullshit attitude..
Sharing knoledge is a virtude.. i think..
anyway, i advice all people to "study" or in aa school if they have time and money or simply reading some books about what you are looking for. a book can be a big friend and a big teacher.
Just do as u like most...

Its Can Give u a Better Push When U Coming Into
Producing But Is Realy Not The Same Technics When You Start Working On Cubase/Logic/Protool And What Ever . Its Just In Your Head That Is All . Must Lorn Evrything From Bigining ! Its Just Giving U 2-3 Steps More With The Beat Or The Basic . For a Real Work On This (And Others Programs) Need To Lorn (And Im Not Talking Now On The Sound - This Is An Allso a Diffrent Thing) Lorn .. Lorn And Lorn ! This Is The Only Way .

Definetly,
Hallucinogen
Infected mushroom
Medicine drum
Cosma
Space cat
Silcon sound and many others,
and many of the ambient artists too I think.

But it's very important to know the music theory if you want to produce good music,
Not necessarly but very important.

Have you ever tried to produce trance?
Off bloody course you need to know the music theory!Yes you can still produce trance without a musical theory but's just not the same in my opinion!

And if you say you can play piano, that would help you a real lot when it comes to lines & melodies - A REAL LOT! - Off course then it's what is in your heart that counts most.

I produce trance music too and although I can make good lines and melodies I am going to start learning the theory soon cause I actually feel ridiculous calling my self a musician without knowing a damn about music theory!

P.S:
A small example here would be Silicon sound!
He used to play with a modern Jazz band in France and you can definetly notice that the guy is musically trained especially in his melodies and if you listen to a track called Shodan you would notice that his bassline changes 3 times and if you listen carefully you can notice that these basslines were made if like he had one of these huge bass guitars (sorry i don't the name in English).

And what about Hallucinogen?
Does anyone really beleive that he has no musical education?Yeah right!see if you can manage to make his melodies without knowing the theory.Off course Mr.Postford is also a sound engineer.

I disagree with Code Red.

being able to play a acoustic instument and being able to read music....and having done that for a few years will certainly help you with an EAR for Key....and pitch.
As well as arrangement.

Its helped me a lot!

They make both great psytrance and have other great projects in other genres..

But when it comes to education or not i dont think school really matters, its the matter of talent..
