what happened to the list of tutorials that everybody was so keen on doing ?

my request - EQ tutorial specifically for psytrance - even though psy varies a lot, theres usually quite a few common elements, pads, kick, bass, hats, fx, drums. i try to let everything have its own space, but they always overlap at some point ?

also been told to cut below 500hz for everything except bassline - how many people follow that ?

I don't believe there can be such a thing as a "tutorial specifically for psytrance". Every sound and sample and kickdrum has its own needs, and these needs vary for each sound depending on what other sounds are in the track, and the exact effect you're after with the track as a whole.

The only way it could work would be if everybody used exactly the same sounds, and even I'm not cynical enough to think we're at that point just yet.

500hz is insanely high imo! I usually lowcut most things at around 150hz (except bass and kick affcourse).

Please consider these parameters not as rules but a starting point for you mixes. the reference may still be helpful.

Kick drum:
+3 eq at 50 Hz +1 db at 3khz -3db 275 hz No FX except maybe subtle ambience. You will tweak the kick again, this is just to get you going.

Cymbals:
Pan them to 2 o'clock and remember their main function is to add the glue to a track to hold the music together--they do not have to be loud or present.

Synth pads:
Do these in stereo and hard pan left and right with generous effects if needed. However, keep them in the back. Pads indeed are beautiful additions to a song but don't let them overshadow any of the main elements of the song.

Bass:
Always front and center. If you use FX restrict yourself to chorusing or a light flange--no reverb.

yeah you wanna just set a really tight notch filter with a high Q setting and just sorta fling it back and forth a bunch of times, high to low, low to high. smack it around good. then quantize the automation to 16th notes, drop a few samples about the galaxy or aliens, and you have instant psytrance.

remember this is for people on drugs, so the more random or pseudorandom you can make it, the better. maybe substitute in an S+H or S+G LFO.
