Which of the good dj's these days manage to mix up their sets with some breaks music? i LOVE deeper stuff by Shiloh and other like-minded producers. to me breaks tracks like their latest "trail mix" to swerve are just huge--they can function like a 7-minute long deep and trippy breakdown in a 4/4 set.

so which of the big boyz is serving up the phat psychedelic breakz to the trance floors?

It's just a handful, unfortunately.

L'Elf (Turbo Trance) has been known to occasionally throw throw a track or two of breaks into his more neo-full-on sets - I have a mixed CD from him that has a couple breaks tracks in the end, and I also know he was playing a Silencer track and also a PFN vs. The Light remix for awhile.

Bakke had a couple breaks tracks in the mix he provided for my show (21st Century Fux & Andre Absolut vs. Minilogue) . I've also heard the Sprout/Tatsu guys (D-Nox and Tobias Bayer) mix some breaks into their sets fairly regularly. Feuerhake has a breaks track in his top 10 on this forum, but I haven't heard a set from him yet.

I obviously do it quite a bit (probably more 50/50 mixture with breaks & 4/4), but I'm not exactly very well-known. When I still lived in Texas, most of the psy DJs also played a ton of breaks (most psy parties had at least 2 hours of breaks), but none of those guys are known outside of their cities.

I would hope that we will see more (at least amongst the proggy DJs) in the coming months. Dragonfly/Kamaflage/LSD are putting out a couple 12" releases with breaks remixes (one ironically by Shiloh) which should get play in the psy scene. There is also some amazingly psychedelic stuff coming from the breaks scene in the last year or two. Some of the older guys like General Midi, Elite Force, Force Mass Motion & Dylan Rhymes (in collaboration), Klaus Hill, and McMillan & Tab have made some sick layered tunes. There are also a shitload of new producers like Introspective, Karton, EK, Shiloh, etc that have also really blurred the boundaries between breaks & psychedelia.

I think (hope!) it is only a matter of time before it starts catching on more.

I know that Tim Sensient makes cool psy breaks, I believe he has some info about who plays too..           A man with a "master plan" is often a woman

Well I drop breaks tracks here and there in a set. Maybe just 4 or 5 in a prog house/trance two hour set. But then I'm not exactly a huge DJ.

Zero Tolerance records have some good breaks tracks, only know Gabe as a DJ from that label tho.

And russ, you are right, can work like a huge long break down... and also a build up back to 4/4.
That's how I try and use them.

thanks guys! can't wait for the new export audio...the space safari track on the new Tatsu compilation is pure GOLD. very interested to hear Frank's take on breaks.
if a dj doesn't do it right, a breaks track, even a good one, can disrupt the flow, but if a dj really knows what's he doing a breaks track can add a lot of depth and interest to a set. after dancing forwards for so many hours, it's a lot of fun to take a break and dance sideways for a while
