The part where I struggle most when it comes to producing psy (or indeed, anything else I work at besides hip hop) is the intro.
Without getting too cliche, how do you guys go about getting a track started?
I usually wind up thinking "I'll get to the intro later", and lo and behold, I start with a pad, and filter/fade in the beat and the bassline...
Is it just because all psy tracks seem to begin a similar way that I get the feeling that my track starting straight off with the kick and bass sounds wrong? Or indeed, anything else starting off the track?
Gah, help me out here! |

I think there*s no definite answer, no Intro 101. It all comes down to your own creativity and knowing what has already been done.
Like you said, there are common ways to structure an introduction, like using pads, gradually filtering in kick and bassline etc.
Listen to a lot of tracks to find out about all these methods, then try to mix them up in a new way.
I*m nowhere near a professional level, but what really helped me out in building intros and breaks is a bit of rhythm theory. Google for some drumming tutorials to learn about basic beat building and especially how standard breaks/fills are constructed. This will really help you in making cool transitions that can be further enhanced by a combination of all the other methods like stabs, pads, filter-play...
I think that intros are the hardest part, because here you can show off your creativity and musical understanding. Not every psy track starts the same way, some elements might be the same, but it all comes down to how these elements are used to create a convincing buildup, that is neither too slow nor too fast

2 things your intro needs to be:
- it can't be boring, i mean, it has to have that catchy sound so the listeners can be hooked by your sound;
- it "should" introduce the theme your track is built around;
but then again, you're thinking too much, imagine a sound in your head (can't be that hard right?) and then try using or making something similar to that

Intros are the fun part! That's why I ended up producing only chillout and no psytrance anymore lol intros all the way!
some tips:
- Make a string intro of your theme. Usually you can use the theme to make a 1/2 of your bpm concept.
- use breakbeats, again at 1/2 bpm. Then add some 1/1 bpm higher percussion, next up can be the kick --> buildup and boom.
- buy omnisphere and have a blast on efx.
- use non-tonal soundefx like radio chatter, signal noises, traffic, naturesounds. Tweak them, chop them, work them...
Good luck!

OK boys stop the fighting already u_u
Now on tompic:
- Dub delay
- Lush reverb
- Filter sound snippets from other parts of track
- Filter everything and send to fx
- Vocal sample is win, no terrence mckenna plz
- Use strange hits with long verb
- Reversed reverb and risers
- Strange percussion lines
- Lfo trickery
- Strings, pads and ambiences
- White noizers
- Glitch
You must think intro as the beginning of the journey, so prepare audience... create expectation... try to increase sound content with time just before droppin bass...
listen to cinematic music and the overall use of stabs and hits in movie trailers can give you new ideas... also intros of no psytrance music sometimes inspire.
And must important... have fun
In Dj sets most intros are not played... but in a live these soundscapes are cool way transition from one track to another. |

Oh, and for the record. Saying "use a cool sample" is the same thing as saying "put in some cool sounds, brah!" as in, it is uselessly generic and doesn't really give the reader any useful information.

yea ur right..i meant a good vocal sample..obviosuly not terrence mckenna...in my case i like to use something with meaning and make it clear enough that people can understand so it works them into the song.I think psy song names actually mean something sometimes..not all the time but sometimes

a lot of times i just say to hell with an intro and get right down to rocking. Other times Ill make a single pattern synthy bit with maybe some filter sweeping. Other times, Ill have it plink aroudn with a not-quite-fully-energized bass/kick/perc like maybe a kick-budu- or kickbu-bukick-budu or something. Or if I find a neat sample thats sorta long Ill mess around with it and maybe have all of the above too (a la theCarp, TDE, or Humanity 2.0 on my soundcloud).
Idk, i dont really try too hard to make an intro if it doesnt feel right.

And for GODS SAKE DONT USE MATRIX SAMPLES. Also I like when a sample is trippy, but doesnt come right out and say LOL DRUGZ, seems more mature that way, less shallow-people-appeal. Also sounds like more thought was put into it. I mean, sure drugs are part of teh scene as they are ALL music scenes, even straightedge hardcore (adrenalin is a drug lolz), but cmon, we dont want to give the general public the impression that drugs are the ONLY thing we are about. . |

"kabbalisticvillage"
- I'm not rippin you out at all, you said "cool sample", now i know that you were talking about some nice vocals samples, but you didn't mentioned that before so i assumed you were just saying "put anyshit in it and it will work as an intro", and besides, i wasn't trying to get you down or somethin, i just want to give you nice info that's all
but on topic:
- about those intros, i said you should make like a small breeze of what your track is really about, use noises that turn into leads, use rising tribal beats if you like them, make sounds come from the left, right, use send reverb to put them behind the listener, add some twisted and distorted pads or atmos, something that can "BOOM" and send us right into the main beat, and drag that pad or atmo in the first 8 or 16 bars, and then kill it, or do some kind of a smooth "get the fuck out of here" thing to it, so it fades away
