similar to Colin's tip with flangers, try using a very subtle, non-cyclic sounding phaser. Oligarc's Phaser is wonderful for this I find.

Also - I find that noise gating can really help tidy up the mix with all percussion.

Does anyone ever use carefully filtered white noise for hats? Or is it accepted that samples are superior?

Sometimes a De-esser on the hihats can be beautiful-
it de-shapes the hard (digital) sound!

Choosing the right samples seems to do the trick in most cases. Try a few before you decide on the sample. Also tuning them can help alot!

Some of the other tips are great!           soundcloud.com/supergroover

sure, why not. don't think "hi-hat", think "the sound that will give drive and groove to the tune, and is a high frequency spectrum and percussive". anything goes if it sounds good in your track.

faxinadu: thanks man, I was sort of just lookin for some confirmation, it sounds cool to me! Plus i sort of enjoy creating sounds by hand and avoiding samples. wish it were as easy to create cool sounding kicks by hand as it is to make hats

it s more easy man to make good kicks than good hats ! you just need the right tool, try zebra and learn how to make them and your quest for psykick will be over...my advice use 2 envelops, one for the click so it set very fast and very curved, one for the tail that is a bit more linear but still curved to not end with a goa kick and avoid muddiness

yes, zebra is the perfect tool for kicks for me. better than bazzism or other kick generators. Such a creamy kicks with beautiful low end.
And for hats Massive is very good. not only in getting the hat sound right, but also patterns you can make with performer. I can do things with massive I cannot do with battery or other drum samplers...
Check microtonic for drum synthesis youll get the idea behind every sound very easily.

reaktor can be good too to generate drums and zebra is imo really good too.
for hats you can use just white noise , hp filter with envelop modulation with not to slow decay. amp envelop determin if it s a open or closed hat.
you can also use fm or ring modulation to generate a high frequnecy kind of noise waveform it s more complex but give intresting result

+1 on reaktor machines.

i make tons of my drum basically from sampling any and every thing, and taking to a wave edtior, cutting small, fade and there you go, percussive sound.

Hey Obelizk ..

Hh loops is the most funnn thing i like to do at all the process , Whats cool in (And i have wrote about it somwhere here before) This show your personality - (When other things , As the bass for example are showing your 'Stability' , But we are asking here with hh so was just an 'Little view' ..(Especially the Hh and Percussion) Its the rhythm and the stream and more and more elements and things we are not even thinking of when the listeners can hear and get/Feel/Derive (Our energy) , This is about many things 'Band' together who creat the final results , Some 'Component' . First you have to feel your self from inside (Thats what im doing) To "Hear" The picture you want to get (With your imagination) . I say 'If you cant be against them .. Be with them' (An old proverb) , So ok , Yes .. I say too if your hh come wrong (When you decide what is wrong for you - Maybe with an more machine/Effects on will sound lovely , You may try) . I would say Hh somthing must be in your blood But 'Heyyy .. ' There somthing there Here & Out we cant get into , Close , Near And learn ? I think all is always open for all , For anyone . Hh its about way of 'Express' (Your self) And how you keep the listeners 'Awake' , In 'Motion' .. , and enjoy of/From what you tell/Say in your story

Try be more 'Wild' and bring it here to your cubase ..

i think the most important and simplest way to liven them up is to vary velocity based on some kind of groove. whether its the on beat or some other variation this will make them come to life. all other techniques are good too, but i found when having this done properly, i dont need alot of processing

thomas penton samples rock for hi-hits, all 24-bit           Gamma Riders EP out now on iTunes and Amazon.com!

velocity linked to amp volume AND decay volume

+

variation in the hats sounds

(coz when the drum s playin the hat never sound the same..so a good way to emule it is instead of usin the same closed hat..have at least 3 for the same loop as exemple... bout the open hat i usualy like to keep the same in the progression with the velocity modulation..but then i like to change the open hat sound very often.. i mean.. every 16 compass change the sample hit of the open hat in the offbeat.. it gives a nice feeling, learnt observin ocelot tracks )

+

stereo plancement

( this one s very important to give an open drum sounds..... a simple exemple : main open hat in the offbeat in the middle , a closed hat a little to the left, a shaker a little to the right..another shaker a little more far to the the left and another closed hat in oposition to that shaker in the right... and obviously playin in a balanced way.. playin ping pon from one side to the other...

+

midi sequence groove...

(it gotta be like the synths.... one asks the other replyes..
so in a drum loop of 4 compass the first 2 compass is askin and the other 2 compass is replyin.... u gotta work in that grove placement...

this arrangment makes a huge difference...

+

midi sequence variation

( dont be lazy..u can add at least a new piece of drum every 8 compass , in my last track i was addin every 4 compass , and that drum will progress in excitment everytime u add the new piece.... in sync with the progression of the synths.... till u get in the peak that will be destroyed to start a new progression in the track again... ( usualy a track contain 2 from 3 loop progression ) so its wise as well to make diferent sets of rythms in the drums for all the new loop progression...to give variety.... ..

i dont know if i was able to explain that last one very well

( ow also agree thomas pentom is very nice drums hats to use )

and mixin wise use ohats chats shakers etc together that fits each otheer well frequency wise....

a nice way to make this is balancin it via the TUNE of them... also it ll help to fit in the tone of the track....if even then it s not gettin good just look for another hit sample...

tight reverb... ( individual via return for every piece ...not in the group )

distortion s always a good for hats....
the bad part of it s havin to add distortion in every single unit of the drum...lots of cpu...or u can put in a group folder..but then u d distortin the sumup of all the hats.... duno if its a good thing or not....

also make sure to cut well the hats..treat indidualy each of them....u dont need low and midle frequencies of them...altho some will do fine with a little mid... sometimes a very gentle high cut can be good aswell maybe a hi shelv ....

then there s the trick of the phase. in the group.....to put a triangle phase very slow 1/1 1/1t to make motion feelin in the hats in general.... but then u gottta make sure to balancew the mix of the FX well so he wont destroy the power of the hats...unless thats what u intend..to have a FXed hats lol

anyway.... those the tecnics i apply nowadays

good production everyone..
