This is probably a topic that no one really cares about, but I just started using sampled hihats instead of running them through Halion, I just import them as wav files in Cubase 4.
A couple things here.
My hihats sound dead and boring. What do I need to do to change that? What effects/processing could I apply?
and
I've noticed a lot of psytrance artists use the basic 16th running closed hat rhythms along with another open hihat on every off beat. Is there any secret to making the open and closed hats sound more uniform?
When I layer them both, the open hat sounds like it sticks out way too much.
All help is very much appreciated. |

^^ good ones
also maybe you could lower the open hihat volume or to remove the close one when the open hits..
volume games (or better velocity on supported instrument) and some reverb should bring hats to life , possibly some shuffle (swing) too , if u not working in extra fast bpm's

A sampler makes stuff like this a lot easier..it helps to be able to play with decay and velocity to get a more flowing groove going.
  You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |

You can also try a transient designer to shorten, or to lengthen and glue the hats together.

Send the main open hat to a buss. Then choose that buss as sidechain input to any other hat/shaker/top end part you have that coincide with the open hat and drop their respective levels a bit when ever the open hat triggers.
That way you have a defined open hat that doesn't jump out every time more top end plays underneath it.
That or send all the hats to a buss and apply some gentle compression.

that sounds cool. I think the routing bus's option sounds good.
What would you guys recommend as to hihats to use?
I use a couple, but they sound kinda cheap. Is there a pack that I can buy of just pure sounding goa/psy drum sounds? |

I almost always use the classic TR-909 open hat as a main hat. Other than that Dr DRE's sample pack and for shakers anything from real shakers to those big wooden rain tubes.
I often import an old breakbeat and just cut the best bits of top end from it.
I don't process them much, just high pass them, some gentle compression and a hint of really tight plate reverb.
I don't like flangers/phasers on main top end parts. I just want a consistent, defined top end.
For techno tunes I get a bit more selective with my top end samples and usually use more odd stuff and always use a ride on the beat with some sort of bitcrusher/distortion plug in. Again though my main open hat is the classic TR-909 one. Nothing beats that

try Goldbaby (google it)
they have the best sample pack both from 909 and 808 , all of them are recorded with tapes and their sound is fantastic, ive bought the 808 (which is very cheap too , about 20$) and the hats kick asses in quality and sound, the snares avery very good but a bit difficult to mix them,, also tomas penton sample pack has nice samples too, though processed, but huge amount of everything.
try also some haas effect on your hats, make a mono hat audio, duplicate that track, pan each hard left, hard right and put some milliseconds delay on one of them, they will suddenly sound all over the place, try this trick with leads also and generally experiment with group and fx channels

You could always put some swing into it to make it more vivid

I'd never be without battery for hi hats. There's nothing better for good skippy hats then assigning velocity to control the decay and pitch. Really gives the feel of real skippy individual hits. |

Don't put your MIDI notes exactly on the same spot of the grid for every HH, a live drummer can't be that precise.
If you're on Live!, you can also use the Velocity effect, to randomize their velocity each time they're played, adding a bit of life to those. |

Whether you're changing the gain of individual hihat samples or using velocity information in a MIDI part, think about how a real drummer might vary the strengh of each hit. ie. most drummers are right-handed so with straight 16ths for example, every even hihat will be a bit louder than the rest. Drummers will often use this to their advantage and vary how heavy their right-hand is over a pattern of a bar or two. Even with the strictly-quantised grid that psytrance needs, this is a really good way to get a human groove into your hats. You can up the pace and give the hats more drive by halving the length of your pattern, making it repeat twice as often.
For FX I'm a big fan of Antares Tube followed by a steep HPF. Also if your hats are sounding a bit straight and boring you can really liven them up a lot using a flanger to swirl the top end around. Try an LFO speed a little bit slower than one beat and make sure the depth and centre frequency are set up so that the flange doesn't bottom out or go too high.

hi ,nice tips here, i have a related question , don`t all sequencers come with a simple built in sampler ? .. i use fl and just generally just load individual perc hits in the built in sampler and enable envelopes , that lets me u can use an open hat as a closed hat .. even as a snare if u draw in lower notes and it wont explode etc , of course also pan individual hits separately and use different velocity + automate effects to get a groove ..but whats the need for a complicated sampler like battery or kontakt ? what advantages do they have ?
