Protools has been the most fancy audio app. for a long time (if you manage to meet its requirements).
But.... Cubase SX2 is a couple light years ahead (System Link, redesigned mixer, Stable Rewire!!, etc)
Anyway I use Cubase, ask someone who is on protools, or someone with Logic, Digital Performer, etc... Is always the same struggle
Cubase Beats Logic HAHAHAHA!!!!! |

Protools 6's Midi system is alot better than the earlier versions... But - as ketzah said - If you don't have the interfaces, cards, etc. (Which basically is what Protools is all about) you are better off with SX2/Logic/Digital Performer, etc..
I'm not sure about the LE version of ProTools 6 - But, come on dude LE versions (Protools)have so many limitations - Basically they exist just for people to get the first Impression and eventually go out and buy the whole package
As far as my own thoughts - I love SX2
Anyway,
Hope this gives you abit of a clearer view...

Protools is The Bomb for audio editing, it's ok for MIDI control and such but u need hardware that costs from 20,000$ and up to make it work properly.
the LE version isn't much good, it doesn't have most of the features the full soft has.

I'm lucky enough to be working in a pro studio myself - Using ProTools along with a Digidesign Pro-Control surface for Post-Production purposes. The program is amazingly easy to use (once you get the hand of it )
Colin OOOD - I believe that you are right about the Compatability needed in the Pro-Audio industry - They are all using it...

Yea but i heard something about platform cross format. OMS or something like that.
You can make a project in PT and continue working on it with Nuendo.
I am not so sure about it, anyone has some info?

Havn't really got a chance to mess around with Nuendo (BTW- I heard it's Networking/File Sharing system is pretty cool )
About the cross platform thingie - I believe it's a new feature in the new '6 Series' ... (ProTools).

it really all depends on how much money you have to spend, sounds silly but it really makes a difference.
YES pro-tools is far superior in the long run, as it is the industry standard and if you start to do projects involving others or recording people coming in with stuff already (which will most likely be in protools format) then its compatable.
But the single biggest factor that makes it the winner ( but even this these days is not too big a deal) is the fact that the hardware and software mash so well, no bugs no compatability issues. Pare this with a G4+ mac system and you can almost gaurantee that every time you turn it on its gona work.
BUT you pay for the privilage. Even the protools digi02 and Le you're talking about wil set you back (depending where you live) a few grand. Thats without even factoring the computer into it. If you do go mac then its a huge price.
Then there's value for money pro-tools is great but you dont get a whole bunch with it especially the LE software, and as software its got far less features and flexibility than cubase sx. To maxamize the reliability some of the pro-tools plugins can only be applied off-line, where as all cubase vst plugs can be realtime or ofline.
To be honest with the advent of winXP and cubaseSX you're best off going with a Pc Cubase SX system and get a nice audio interface. Its far far cheaper than pro-tools/mac and its also more powerful without having to spend additional dosh to get more features/plugs.
However if money isnt an option and you're gonna be doing pro stuff, or you're concerned with the potential hassles of compatability/reliabilty of a win/sx machine then go for protools.
BOTTOM LINE : PROTOOLS is way expensive (considering the hardware etc...) but its much more compatible with its self hardware(the hardware that comes with it....)
if u got the cash go and spend it
i whould go on cubase sx2
