Hi pple!
Electricity can sometimes be a worring issue for your gear.
I recently heard about "Power Conditioners" in order to protect my rack gear from "frying", even thou the chance of that happening can be very low.
Good power conditioners like "Furman power conditioners" offer, noise reduction from the mains, spike protection etc.. they also, safely power down the stuff that is pluge into them in Unsafe electrical conditions.
I am 0 when it comes to electricity issues, so i would like to know if you guys who have "pro gear" use some kind of power conditioners/voltage regulaters, (must do!, ?)
I udersatnd the protection they offer, but i dont clearly know technical issues.
i am getting a rack mount one from "Furman",so i can safely plug all my important stuff into it,for what i have been reading, Furman, are the company who lead the market in that area.
But please, can you coment on this.
I don't have alot of equipment (yet), but what i have is good and expensive, so i would like to be working safely.
i will be watting for some of you sahre experience and advice...hope someone has a solid knowlege at this electricity stuff.
peace for all

I have seen such stuff in two high end studios here in switzerland. well one was more wanna be high end.. anyways..
The things they had there were not only for voltage stability, but also "quality" like making it true sinuses and making sure, that all units are fed "in phase"...
Honestly.. for me thats all esoteriks... but who knows. maybe one of the details.
We have pretty "clean" electricity here in switzerland, they still used it...

Good link you put there, subconciousmind. thanks.
it explains what i needed to hear..
well, i guess you guys are right, it is defenetly essencial in places/countries with bad electricity..
but, you know when you switch the heater on, the likes flashes and stuff...
like subconciousmind said, these units feed the gear with clean voltage., they also provide noise filtering..
Hum, UPS, that is a good thing not to loose data isn't it ?, but i usually save as i go, so..?
what about if you go for a "Live" somewhere unsafe, it would be good to have a good power conditioner in your rack, no?
thanks pple... A good idea is Many ideas...

Line electricity in the US is relatively unstable, but I can't comment on the electricity in other countries. A power attenuator/regulator will protect your gear from power surges and minimize noise interference. A UPS will also do all of these things and give you around 10-15 minutes of power when the power goes out, so its only advantage is data protection.
Luis, I don't think having a power attenuator anywhere other than home is really necessary. It might be a good idea if you're playing live somewhere with electricity from a generator. If you're playing live with a laptop, your laptop battery is acting as a UPS and regulator. It's more important that you read up on voltage differences before traveling where you'll need your gear...that's when you can actually fry your equipment.
  You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |

OK!
Well in my case, i haven't played live yet, but when i do, i will probably be using my rack mount pc for the mean time, my souncard/preamps and other modules, so.....
but yeah, for the studio i am defenetly geting a Voltage Regulator with nice features...it would be nice if theres is one that has got "UPS",so if a power cut happens it gives you plenty of time to power of all the gear.
Some power conditioners ou there have leds and shit, they show you the voltage that is coming in and so on...
I don't really need to be monitoring electricity voltage, jeje, so,just a good unit with important features...
thanks friends!

yep the electricity here in the USA is bullshit
i had abnormal voltages in both my houses i had to contact FPL Florida Power Line for them to fix the problem i got a monster power rack mountable power center / clean power it really is a great investement also get some keyboard covers so dust, and or hairs etc dont in ur equipment when not in use i had to clean a few dead keys in the past very simple fix remove keyboards case. then remove key the is dead then with an pencil eraser clean the metal contact strip wham finish easy fix and it wont cost ya time or money or headaches
i done it atleast 3 times with my nord lead 2. its got a rubber protector so dirt or any dust wont mess with the metal contacts but its bound to happen after years again easy fix just thought i share encase anyone got a dead key they can just do it themselves Cheers |

make sure your studio is on another electricity group then your fridge. normally in europe this is enough as far as electricity is concerned. the switching on of the pump in the fridge can make a second of mess in the electricity net.
when there are occasional electricity cuts a ups is nice. i also like the protection from it for over-currents that in some countries can happen with thunderstorms. i payed around 60 dollars for a box and it let me in 2 month already twice close down a project safely in a no-elec. situation. but thats in costarica, in holland i never had any electr. cut or other problem. |

Thanks for the coments!
First of all i am gonna be checking if the electricity in my studio is fine and safe..
I will probably buy some kind of electricity protection for my gear, but before i do that i will research well and be shure what i am buying.. I can't afford to waste money..
Anyway, i hope to buy something no only for the sutdio but for playing live...
Peace
Luis
