Any suggestions to remedy situations such as when a DJ has bad monitoring conditions [console too close to main speakers] and not being able to get enough isolation without cranking up the headphone volume to dangerously high levels.
Are there any plugs that can be worn with headphones?

I got a pair of flat attenuation er-15s here:

http://earplugstore.stores.yahoo.net/jbcuearpl.html

I use them when Im playing and I actually hear much better. i paid around 150 USD, cheaper than euros, dont know how much of a difference there is though they work great!

Got a pair of the hearos ones. They do a better job that the regular foam ones, but I find they are not comfortable. I feel like I'm having to stick these things way in my ear canal. Also, I can't wear them in my headphones, they stick out too far.

Was certainly worth a try for the money, but I think I need to make some molded ones.

Again, as someone who suffers from tinitus, do not hesitate to spend money to get some good plugs. I don't think it's necessary for everyone, but it may be..--$200, $300, $400...heck I'd pay thousands of dollars to not have ringing in my ears 24/7.

If you don't believe me, rent 'It's All Gone, Pete Tong', you'll get a taste of it.           Keep The Faith,

The idea is you shell out more money, and get a better pair of ear plugs that tries to reduce the volume in a flat attenuation sort of way. If it works right, your ears hear everything the speaker puts out, but just at a lower volume.

It takes practice, and discipline to not just keep turning things up, but your ears are worth it!           Keep The Faith,

i dont wear it for my set , i have control on the monitor volume its good inough
btw , the u can feel the damage instantly.. if it hearts your ears then its not good , if its hight volume for long time its not good , i often take a break to take a walk in the forest to relax my ears then go back to full on dancing (taping my left foot u know hehe)

I don't wear mine during my set like tsabi said I just adjust the volume of the monitors pretty simple.

It doesn't mute the music, it makes it easier to listen to IMO. Instead of worrying about the sound volume because you stand so close to the speakers, you can work quietly.

Foam earplugs are fine. At least if you find the ones that fit your ears well. I have tried quite a few and have found the ones I am happy with. Make sure that the Noise Reduction Rating says at least 29db, otherwise they are crap. Instead of buying a pair of expensive earplugs, try out some foam ones and see which ones fit your ears best. Also make sure you know how to insert them...

This thread should be stickied otherwise people will forget, at least people will be reminded by having it always up there.

I don't think earplugs would fix the ringing I hear but I can say it would be very depressing being deaf after hearing so much and knowing it could of been prevented.

FYI, controlling your monitor volume may not work in all environments. If the main speakers are putting out 105 dB where you standing/playing, guess what, you have to turn your monitor levels up at least that loud (where you are standing) for it not to be masked.

If you can find foam ones you like, that's great. But since everyone's ears are different, they often do not fit right, reducing their effectiveness. Seriously, given the amount of money spent on gear & software, the amount for a proper set of earplugs is fairly minor. The value is absolutely huge vs. the cost.

I also vote to sticky the thread.

my experience with earplugs:

i also play guitar in a metalband^^ and we tried those
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun05/images/qab1earplugs.l.jpg
its really disgusting because you always have to clean them (earwax, and yes... i clean my ears weekly^^) costs a bit, and the filter quality is not really my taste.

next plugs we tried those
http://www.ehow.com/images/GlobalPhoto/Articles/2094930/earplugs_Full.jpg
cheap but you hear nothing.

and now my whole band uses this

no joke, its cheap, guests also can use it if they visit us in our rehearsal room, and if you plug it in with the right method, you can get good results.

Get thoose where you do a mold of your inner ear then make a plug from silicon. It comes with diffrent filters depending on what attenuation you want. Id say they are more linear than your toilet papaer
