Promotions tutorial?

Is anyone here qualified to teach us how to promote our music? Lately I've been asking myself if its possible to be a successful musician without doubling as a promoter, and the answer I'm leaning towards is "no." I'm really not a fan of self promoting, it seems kinda shallow and leaves me feeling dirty, but I guess I've gotta just knuckle up and do it.

So what does one do to promote their music in 2010? My impression is that myspace is pretty much a ghost town, so I signed up for soundcloud and bandcamp. but what do I do to get more hits? If I was a dj I'd be playing shows and establishing a network, but I'm a producer...I don't really play shows and party all the time. Should I start a facebook fan page?

Any tips you folks might be able to give would be greatly appreciated!

i've only been on soundcloud a short while now, but I'm kinda diggin it. it seems like its a fairly honest way of promoting your music without shoving it down peoples' throats. But, still, some people with very uninspired music have tons of hits on soundcloud, and I'm at a loss as to how they get that many people to listen to their stuff. are these the people that are just blasting forums, facebook, mailing lists, and otherwise whoring themselves out? is that really what we have to do?           http://soundcloud.com/rob-vector

That's a questions many new producers ask. It's actually not hard at all to promote yourself, it just requires a lot, and I mean A LOT, of time for people to start showing interest in you, rather than you trying to make them listen to your music.

Find 2-3-4 forums, with a good population of users and good activity and when you create a new track post it for comments and suggestions, on those forums. Add friends on fb, that are interested in the music you make, and post your sounds to your wall or send them messages (but never spam!, try not to send them messages every day), make a fan page, group or w/e, myspace. In general, make a profile for yourself and your art in every known community, as the ones I've already mentioned.

When you think your music has become good enough to send to labels, do it. You might not get a reply the first 1-2-3-5 times, but at least you've sent it. Make a good list of labels, that release your style of music. Make a good net of like-minded people and producers, that are interested in that style on msn, skype or w/e. (i would suggest msn, since it seems most artists use that).

I don't know what else to say, you just need to make your music as easily accessible, in the beginning, to as many people as possible and keep giving new material and showing the people you work on your music. After that, only time needs to pass.

I AGREE!!

We have to take the first step in promoting our music, but not spamming the net!..

..then if we're good enough soon or later somebody will be interested on us..

Promo is hard and unrewarding. But if the right peops liisten, at the right given time, it may become a boost and result in finding a label.

It is hard times to get your music appreciated.
and a giant test of patience imo.

Facebook and Soundcloud are your best tools today.

If people like the tunes on your soundcloud, they will post them on their own on their facebook pages and more people will see them and then at some point you will start receiving message from labels wanting to release your tunes and/or people who make parties, asking how much you charge for parties and so on and so on...

if it was perfect labels would promote their artists , and artists would concentrate mostly on making music, but it seems like it s not the reality ,artists promote and auto produce themself more and more.

Rob vector, was listening to ur stuff.. sounds very good.. even the mastering is ok...

best thing to do is .. make ur own label.. give it to distributor like arabesque .. or release on ektoplasm .. ektoplasm is very good way to promote your name..

dont run after labels .. they all do the same thing..

There's barely enough time to make music, let alone run a label which requires a lot of time away from the studio by it self.

If you can't find a label to release music, do it through Ektoplazm. If that does not work out either, just give it away for free.
