Promon - Funky Fumes (Inpsyde Media)

01. tenk 0:59
02. beyond contact 7:21
03. xenodorf cooling-fan 9:50
04. slemvext (ft. jenova project) 9:12
05. defined inside 8:05
06. trolltyg 7:04
07. gnillevart emit 7:59
08. bruno bandits 7:33
09. throbbing hobbits 8:27
10. structured 2:06

With this album new Swedish act Promon blast their way onto the scene with a resounding
'squelch'.
Not all tunes on Funky fumes are unreleased - Throbbing Hobbits was on
the previous
(first) Inspyde Media release 'Psychedelic Sparks'. This compilation
contained the winning tracks from the first Psynews competition, and
Throbbing Hobbits was one of the better tracks, in my opinion....

Oh, ok there is another Inpsyde Media release: they are doing this
excellent public service by rereleasing classic albums, the first being
Alien Protein.

On with the album review. Now this is the kind of dark and twisted
psychedelia I want to hear more of! Some of these tunes are extremely
weird. Some are extremely good. None are boring. The other day my
friend Millie came round - she really likes psychedelic trance but made
me change the CD because it was too strange. That gives you some
clue.....

The tune you'll remember most (for better or worse) is Slemvext. It
contains this children's song with chorus

"it's a mushroom, it's a fungus
and they're growing all around us and among us"

Ok. And it gets weirder later on but I won't ruin the surprise. The
trouble is you can't really listen to this kind of thing too often: it's extremely
funny the first time (if you have a stupid sense of humour like me),
but the joke wears out after the n'th time.

Fortunately there are other tunes on the album which are more
resilient. I notice that Trolltyg has made it into various Isratrance
members' recent 'Top 10s', and with good reason!

I actually really like the short intro tune. It is not a tune, just a
'squelch solo' on their v.a. synth. But it is quite atmospheric: I feel
I am on Yoda's homeworld in The Empire Strikes Back:)

Hmm I am not sure about the idea of filling tunes with samples saying
'Psychedelic Drugs' and 'L.S.D.' over and over again because maybe it
is a bit tired. But then again I sometimes find myself wandering across
fields in Portugal with these kind of thoughts circling in my head
without respite so maybe it's ok hehe. These samples occur in
particular on the excellent 'Beyond Contact' and 'Xenodorf Cooling-
Fan', but I much prefer the menacing 'They're coming!' (from tune 3)
which is repeated over and over in various tortured variations. Ouch!
Time to WIG OUT!

'Gnillevart Emit' is an interesting tune. It has quite a techy edge to
it, with the usual twisted synth riffs over the top. And a bit of a nod
to melody as well. I like. Also featuring that weird vocal sound which
I now always associate with a certain buddhist monk singing on my
computer screen......

I think the production is ok, but not amazing. Sometimes it sounds a bit
muddy, though I suppose this suits the squelchy synth sounds / moody
atmosphere. Also some samples have too much background hiss where I
think this could be easily EQd away (e.g. start of tune 3)... maybe I'm
wrong / very pedantic.

In conclusion: this album will send you straight round to your local
psychotherapist. I advise you to buy it immediately.

yeah nice review.
i think these type of reviews are much better than the ones detailing each and every track ni a technical way, telling what beat comes in at what minute of the track, and what sound comes in at 4:28 and all that stuff.
i think i can make a better decision on whether to buy or not buy using the above review rather then a detailed technical breakdown of the tracks without any real opinion.
thanks, jon.
