after reading this interesting discussion i cant resist to give my 2 cents...
me too dont like labels. fuck styles, fuck names, fuck scenes... all i want is good music.
mix it all up: house, techno and trance: no boundaries like it used to be when i first went to parties in early nineties...
(at least this was my impression)
no limits, no rules that would be cool

Patrick,
thanx man, you are right.
All we want is good music, dance and fun!!!
Forget lables and forget the frontiers in your minds.
Everything should be possible and especialy the people in the psytrancescene should be the most tolerant and liberal people all over. Tolerance was always to highes priority of the hippy scene...!
Forward ever - Backward never!!!
greetings to all and peace.

The one who forgets/denies his past I wonder what kind of future he will have
I like progress in everything but as artist and a dj I really don't like 'teaching' crowds what is best for them.. I can try to point a direction but the bottom line is that ppl come to dance and not be subdued by a teacher/prophet.. Maybe this scene should be split in two after all
And one more thing - more than ever it all is matter of taste.. What is progressive for one might be a boring rubbish for other and so on.. so I guess the partigoers READ WELL THE FLYERS and go for parties u really want to be in

But one can still look forward without forgetting their past.
Sometimes people even come back to their past, combine it with their present, and make something new. Look at Tim Healey....from punk/rocker to electronic to punk/rock-electronic.
It always comes full circle.

Wow, no one questioned my description... hehehe... I thought I´d come here and answer a lot of stuff...
So I´ll add a little more... it seems to me Trance could be descripted as music for your feet and soul... the progressive sound, as it presents it self now a days, hv made a shift towards the knees...
RG... once again great.
Yuli, u know it man... I was listening to ur music when I started listening to Trance back in 98... respect.
About the music, all of u guys who are artists (DJ is a lame term) can make music in any directions, no boundaries. But u don´t really hv to call it trance if it´s not. Let ur magic grow where ever it takes u, and I will respect ur choices...

go to party with good will to enjoy and you will be happy for shure... dont check any info if you ask me....
i was in a fest where was a second stage in a circus tent for all kind of techno/house/elektro/freestyle/hiphop and didnt knew 70% of the lineup but the party there was rocking like i didnt seen somwhere else, and whats a vibes and varied crowd.... much better then any poster stage/acts.
its all the same as with taging genres, u better go to the good party's then to the linups on the invitations, its shure can surprise you more...
and yuli.. each one and hes roots...
ok?
yo dono wana mes wit punk her righ?
believe me there is more house in your blood then you ready to admit.. but its too deep under your psy passed years adventure.. im shure you will find somday what im talkin about (if you aint allready found it lately, and you just want the surprise to be coming stronger)

Yes Uzi, each one and his past for sure.
You all forgetting very important thing. U listen and into trance music for a very long time now. Try to remember how was for u the first encounters with trance / the first time u discover different mind states etc.. Would you ever think at that time about full on 145 track that it is not psy / or boring etc..? Never - because u were into this thing very much. Time passed your lust for the music changed and u r more grown up looking for other directions which is very good. I myself dig much more Porn Trance ( 125 - 135 bpm music ) than the trance I defend here.
So why I defend it?
It is very simple - many many ppl that just got into the music, got into it just because the reasons u did 1, 2, 5, 8 years ago and wouldnt understand what u mean since they are in a different stage alltogether. So all that u say is basically relevant to those that been there done that bought the Tshirt and found out it is similar to Jason's
I am tired of this
have a nice weekend all of u

Yuli has a point here. It's also about the time you've been listening to the music. It's also personal taste.
Mike A 1997 - Just got into Junior High (I think ) and oh man! Eyal Barkan is stomping!!!!! Killer!!!!!
Mike A 1998 - MFG, Astral Projection... Oh my this is dreamy music!
Mike A 2000 - Infected Mushroom, children of the doc, etc... Psychedelic music! Now this is totally psy
Mike A 2001 - wtf is this psy? Lemme come back to the dreamy melodies of mfg
Mike A 2002 - ASTRIX ALIEN PROJECT OH YEA KILLLLLLERRRRRR
Mike A 2003 - Ok thing that come out of scandinavia are really good... Hmm.. tegma, sonkite, vibrasphere.. I like it
Ok this tiny history of myself is to clear a point, which is that musical taste changes over time and things that seem absolutely bad for you one day will be your food the next day, and then in a week you might wonder what did you find in that music
Anyway, remember that this is ALL trance - no matter if it's fullon, prog, goa, whatever. Calling it house will not change the fact that it's trance after all. Different ways to conjure up this music, under different influences but you're all forgetting that this is simply trance (notice that I didn't label it as psy, prog, house, club, whatever). You can't have tracks in the same style - that would sound amazingly boring, and whenever there is a slight influence from another genre you run to invent a new name to it. Notice that "our" trance is the only genre influenced by others, it goes vice versa as well. I heard psytrancey elements in club trance not once and not twice.
(tbh I've heard some house and then some of the house-trance, and the house-trance seems closer to trance than to house )
So the bottom line is to stop whining about genres and go to actually listen to them.

I like to be challenged by music i hear, i want it to make me feel uncomfortable and to make me think deeply. Fact is most of the "progressive" (please, you know what i mean) psy acts around these days do not do this. Sure they make music that is good for dancing, its fun to bop around to and sure on another level some of the music is technically and musically brilliant...but what about the vibe? This is what got me into this music to start with, the weird as fuck alien atmospheric dark vibe that gives a track more meaning than just to dance to. Of course i like and appreciate many styles, but we are talking about psy trance yeh and this type of dark moody ballsy atmospheric and minimalistic psytrance is so rare these days. The other day i heard tryptamin on iboga from years ago, fuck it sounded tatsy...so deep, give me that any day over most of their new stuff...

"the alien wierd as f^%k'' hope u dont mean this is the only sort if 'vibe' worthwhile of other dimensions;). I believe there are many vibes worthwhile exploring in psytrance... alot havent even been done properly yet... i'm not so into the alien 'scapes these days, altho i certainly was... more now the timeless structures of our world and use of the echoes of our own consciousness, not somewhere else...imagine music structured so cleverly u totally missed that it was clever...??! weird?.. yay! or picking up where progressive rock left off in the 70's... led zeppelin in trance? and no, i'm not talkin a bloody remix!!
oh yeah, progressive? the term in this modern electronic day came from the dj's not the muso's really, the guys who were progressively mixing music. intent, patience etc, these ideals were kinda lumbered over into the writing of the music itself, in order to complement the ideas even further on the floor... It never SCREAMS for attention, i.e. 'look at me!! look at me!!' but is always consistent, patient, ultrafatfatfat.
I simply cannot and will not listen to a tune that has/holds no suggestion of anything beyond the media it is laser burned into....?? i dont want images conjured in my minds eye of guys and gals in studios bopping along to simple kik/bass/kik lines... i want to hear music [and write it;)] that lifts my perception through tunnels of light and further into states of freedom and audiovisual ecstasy... and i mean not the violent rocket ship of goa or full on.. more the subtle and dreamy but not fluffy MATURE writing styles...
i guess the old 'alien-outta space' vibe feels a little sterile to me these days, need more earthiness
cheers! |
