I would like to ask you all.

What means progressive?

Sometimes I`m not sure if it`s right to use this word for a kind of music which is for sure not progressive.

I think that there is no real progression in trance. Or is there something new what I haven`t heard till now?

progressive = progress = evolution = development = fresh = new

So many people ask for progressive trance music. This is cool but please than be open for something new.

There is realy a lot of new electronic music around.
"Just BE OPEN (this is the basic requirement) and maybe soon you will get new music to your partys".

lovely greetings

I remember progressive rock, that was an interesting time for rock music.

Progressive trance, I don't really know either. I just received the newest collection of progressive trance music. For all I can say is that in general, there aren't many psychedelic elements in the music left. But there are more and more house influences.

In my opinion I don't really care what people label music. Music is music and if I like it I go for it

progressive psy trance is a style that relies on subtle progressions in structure to hold the listeners interest...maybe.

I see 2 meanings of "progressive" in music.

1. Progressive as a sound - to me, this means depth, subtle melodies, light feel....stuff like Son Kite, Ticon, 12 Moons. Maybe it is synonomous with daytime music. When I music labeled as "progressive house" or "progressive breaks", that is the sound I hear. In this sense, progressive depends more on the producer. A progressive DJ is only a DJ that plays music that has the progressive sound.

This is limiting. When somebody wants a progressive DJ as defined above, they want a specific sound. Nothing really new.

2. Progressive as a concept - pushing forward, disovering new ground, trying new sounds, new arrangements. Not re-hashing the old formulas. This is not attached to any sound. A producer is progressive because they push boundaries, not because they are attached to a specific sound. A DJ can be progressive because of HOW they play and select tracks, not because of what sounds they play.

For example, I consider Tsuyoshi Suzuki to be one of the most progressive DJs today. He doesn't play any music that is labeled "progressive trance". But he is constantly changing his style, trying new sounds, etc. He is always making a new sound for himself. Always developing and changing.

This is the definition of progressive that I think means more development. No specific sound is defined. No limits are defined. You cannot specifically define what progressive IS. You can only say what progressive ISN'T - staying in one place.

From what I've read, I'd say timsensient is right. Though I don't buy this "progression in the track structure" thing.

Do you know lots of tracks which show the same pattern all along ? Would be pretty boring if you ask me. It should sound like a kind of hypnotic noise produced by a machine. Whence I conclude that I only listen to "Progressive music". Well, music in short, as Elysium pointed out.

Or the definition of krelm : progressive = innovative. Why not use "innovative" in the first place then ?

All this revolves around a minor problem of vocabulary at the end of the day.

progressive for me is a state of mind,
when every short period i find myself deal with another sound, forgotten old ones. development and diversity.

Nobody asked for new music - or I`m not sure cause they ask for progressive trance.

I thought progressive trance is something new but I always hear, Ticon, Shiva Chandra, bla bla bla... Thats why I`m confused. People use words without to know whats the meaning is.

Anyway it would be a wonder if progressive trance could be everything for e.g. breakbeatdubtrance with house and jazz influence. Everything should be possible at a party!

keep on progression, don`t stuck!!! The earth also dosen`t stuck...!!!

Because Christian didn't ask what we think "innovative" means.

But seriously, the difference is extremely subtle to me and I don't even know if I can put it into words. But I will try. Innovative is just a description to me. A track is innovative or a DJ is innovative because they do something different and creative. Progressive (in music) is more of an attitude or concept. Maybe more of a direction. Never settle, never get stuck in a rut. Always incorporate something new. Never change directions...just add directions.

It is also just my own weird thinking of the words and for sure nothing universal to everybody else (or probably *anybody* else ).

Exactly.

That is why I never really try to accurate define the style I like to hear or play. When people ask me what kind of music I play, I answer "everything". If I say "progressive", people automatically think German & Swedish sounds (which is only a small part). If I say trance, they think something else. I still meet people who think I play all full-on because 2-3 years ago I played that style and was "evil". People like to define (human nature), and different words mean different things, so it is hard to simply describe a musical style without triggering a pre-conceived notion in somebody's head which may be far from what you are trying to say.

I write too much.

I still wait for progressive tejanogabbercorejazztrance.

I would say, - so much labeling, but so little difference...

Progressive or innovative, who?

"breakbeatdubtrance" ok not bad, only the psychedelic missing in there...

People out there jsut be open for every kind of music...If we forget our frontiers everything could be much more easier.

Don`t stuck!!!

Why not listen to a techno track on a trance party and otherwise listen to a trance track on a techno party?

Why not listen a house track on a electro party and otherwise listen a electro track on a house party?

I agree....

But why even have a trance party or techno party or house party or electro party or......?

Just have a party. All good music.

I do enjoy parties that focus on one style of music. But sometimes I want to go to a party and hear trance, house, breakbeat, techno, all in one night. Tsuyoshi, Rennie Pilgrem, Moshic (for example) all in one party.
