there are basic trance structures, why not just copy a good prog track and put markers where they introduce or drop out sounds..

an interesting structure is a structure that delivers, but not necessary were you think it should. i mean you can sometimes figure out that a sound will come or something will happen.. like now will the open hihat come. Thats what i meant with that things need to be on the right spot, and that is of course depending on the groove it self.

the best is to start a simple groove and use all elements with finess. and thinking, ohh here will a long reversed hihat introduce a clap, or whatever...

i say making some building blocks, dont start dry without any pieces, if you got some things to work with it will make birth of other things..

dont get bored that you play 32bars of just drums, casue its all about tension and release and if you got a sweet groove i can wait till you introduce something interesting and rasie the rension..

patience is the key, i know i sometimes have material for a 7min track but i made it all on 3 min... my best side is not to structure..

Now I can understand why the best progressive tracks doesn't sound as progressive track in the manner people conceptualize it in forums and discussion places.

It's better to listen to the music...

Check the structure of vibrasphere
one of the best for me
Great sound design and wonderfull structures!
But it just depends on the style you're looking for
Progressive is a really broad style actually, more diversity in structure i think           SQL: http://www.myspace.com/sqlmusic

128-130 bpm progressive is not that similar to 135 bpm prog wich is somehow different than 138-140 prog.

In my opinion, the lower the BPM the more repetitive and loop-based (like house and techno) the structure and the synths. Faster prog usually has longer synth lines or synth grooves. Drum programming is essential... prog is about a building groove, move-yo-waist-line-stylee.
Keep your kicks long and fat and use sidechain compression and ducking for everything.

Anyway, like someone said, its a wide movement, and very few projects fall in common place. keep it different and progressive, be a stranger among music boredom...
ah, and listen to tons of dub music for delay mayhem...
prog sometimes feel like very fast dub music...
