What elements makes a track progressive?

How are the sounds layered compared to full-on?

I have no problems in making full-on, but progressive structures are very confusing. I'd appreciate some tips to get things started.

In detail, my problem is to create progressive percussion loops, that are enjoyable to listen without any melodies or such.

prog is not difficult......you think that is confusing
because prog has wide range of bpm 120-142

you just need listen a lot music thats all.....and ofcourse
you need music knowledge and rythm sense!

try to experiment!

good luck!           www.myspace.com/aliasix

The thing my man about progressive compared to full on is that the structure is more and i mean MORE open to creation than full on.

About the loops hmm well , jess u can do a lot of percussion with sounds, just experiment, the thing is in the time!           If u are Something, Dont ask for nothing
If u are Nothing, Dont ask for something

instead of just putting a chopped drum loop just create ur own try to make a nice groove containing kick bassline and many drum hits and then make variations of the first u make!

experiment with different sounds than only drum hits!

try to fit some staccato synth stabs in the groove!

add some nice pads/drones as a carpet under the main groove!

chord sweeps, filtered synths with nice stereo delays!

its all in the experimentation use ur imagination and listen to alot of music!

cut cut cut , and then delete.
prog is very minimal , choose ur sound carefully. its much about sound design more then actual musical composition (mostly , the boring ones )

Wow, really instructive. This was a real eye-opener.

Alias i agree with you on the percussion stuff. All my tracks are missing a good catchy percussion loop. I tried to fit a percussion loop from a sample cd to a track (No worries im not gonna use it) and it really started living and sound like music.

Thank you!:)

dude ...you dont need to feel shame or something

if you want to use loops from sample cd

maybe its good for you.....just learn different structures of the drums/percs!

then you can make your own drums/percs parts
and beleave me.....you will make it better than cd sample

cheers!

Listen to Tetrameth.

In the begining the whole point of the progressive movement was to defy convention, hence structure's usually very out of the window. As it got more trendy to do it became all about building up to a huge break and then bringing it all back and then some. I think it's ok to do this, but make sure the break is proper interesting and not whats expected.

It's more fun to make your own drum grooves. As I always like to say "what's the hurry?". Spend time loving velocity and swing.

All the best things take time .

Make a tasty groove, ride it out for a while then do what you got to do.

My ideal progressive is something around 120 bpm that makes you move your hips. Melodic is a must. Minimal is ok if its well constructed but progressive needs to be progressive and to me that means melodic progressions with various sound fx.

As was said earlier most progressive and most dance music for that matter is more about sound design than composition. I'd be grateful if you didn't fall victim to this trend.

It's about repetition, variation and where to draw the line between them For me, good progressive psy more often than not has an "ostinato" or a constantly present sound or groove. Also you often hear prog tracks using blocks of 12 bars instead of all blocks being 16 bars.

I don't agree with Tsabeat when he says that musical composition is less important than sound design in progressive psy (sorry). I think full-on is generally more dogmatic than progressive psy. The wider bpm-range of prog opens up more possibilities and i hear more creative use of drums and grooves in prog than in full-on. Also the compositions are often more inventive and diverse. And tension is usually created by using the architecture of the track instead of just using sweep sounds and short breaks. It's not that i don't like full-on, but i think progressive psy is more than just minimal sound-design music.

I'd be interested in seeing a track layed out in Cubase.
Just to get a general knowledge of how it builds up.
Would be nice to see where breaks start, percussion comes in etc.
Anyone got some to show?

I love Good structured progressive music...

listen to Son kite - Receive Part II EP

Really great structure on this tracks..
_________

when you arrange progressive you got to really feel the flow, if something comes too early or too late you messed it all up... so really use your sense here and work hard...

it can be as simple a putting a 16th hihat pattern in the right place to make the track lift, and then drop it at the right place.... and remember things dont have to be even, try odd numbers and try placing things in all places of the beat..

Well I suppose structure comes from the head, and therefore it's quite a pain to really figure out an interesting structure.
Actually I'm to lazy because ideas don't come by them selves.
And some guidelines/tips/examples are always nice to get people further.

im totally agree with tsabeat
its quite boring for me those non melodic tracks

and there is quite few good non melodic prog artists
that not cause me asleep

artists like....ace ventura, sensient, perfect stranger, atmos etc....

those artists are drummers or atleast they had drum playing experience and they making superb pecs/drums parts

the key for good prog track is percs/drums.....IMHO!

DJONES: just listen a lot to music
if you need help you can pm me
