Hey all.
I'm wondering what are the key building blocks to making progressive psy?
Where should I start? I'm not exactly which artists are prog and which aren't. I have a compilation album of prog though and I wanna try make the sound but it seems a lot harder to make than full on or dark psy. Any recommendations of artists?
The bass definitely sounds different to full on and other styles (usually) and well yeah... you guys should know how it sounds!
Enlighten me on techniques, plugins etc

There is no recipe for that or some particular plugins..
If ur listening to psy and progressive than ul instinctively know how to do proggy-psy cross-over.. I made few such tracks but Im still exploring this new concept.. Dunno of other artists which make something like that.. If u do know any please let me know..
About the bass, I do one proggy and one psy bass and usually keep them separated so I can have nice proggy intro and psy main part.. Im just begginer and I recently started combining those two styles..

I thought it was more of a separate subgenre rather than just a fusion of psy and prog. |

the best way of making a specific style is to analyse tons of tracks of that style and see how the pro´s do it.. unless you do not have an idea what the style is about you cannot write tracks like that..
a good start for prog trance is to look at the rythmic section.. instead of 16s baselines like in full on go to 8s and play with different grooves. see what that does.. lower the temp gives you more space for groove. play with percussion grooves. use phat basedrums instead of short knockin ones..
and listen to good prog..againgainagainagain
good luck mate |

Mark, these are progressive trance artist, I listen to them all the time and spin their records and thats not psy for sure.. Maybe Beat bizzare but he isnt progressive as much as I remember, hes only psy.. And Oryx I hadnt listened for a while..
As much as I know proggy psy doesnt exist for now..
Maybe Sabretooth would be worth to mention but I gotta listen to it again to be certain..
I somehow have feeling these two dont fit together and that u cant make proggy psy cause it contradictory..
And what about proggy psy cross-over/fusion?
Anyone makes that? Is there any competition or am I in it all by myself?

i'm not sure what you are talking about, dude. i would imagine most people consider all those Progressive Psy, as opposed to progressive (club) trance (sasha, van buuren... i don't know, i don't really listen to this).
at least that's how i always thought about this. |

Yeah i would say that they are al definataly progressive psy and they are sold as such!
Check Iboga records, they are all classed as "prog Psy" same on psychop etc.

Hey,
Maybe this topic here would help you out http://forum.isratrance.com/why-does-progressive-have-to-mean-slow-and-soft/
some usefull links are in there, and some nice conversation also. Some so called "formulas" of differency between full on and psy-progressive
But in rough view i can tell you this
Vertikal Records, Iboga, Spin-twist, Plusquam, Synergetic, Iono-music... those are true psy-progressive labels.. than you are having some new age progressive labels, which have nothing do do with psy mostly.. just progressing into minimal
But this is a starter wish you luck / Cheers,
P.

Sorry NOT EVERY psy-progressive label is converting into so called "new-age-progressive" alias "minimal-progressing" ! Few labels are turning into more progressive-house... maybe only Spin-Twist is one of them listed above

hehehe I knew excatly in which release you would go )
well, as i have said to you before.. this is so called "minimal-progressing"!! New age sound... Perfect Stranger also left his sound behind and moved to another one ( he is Iboga´s DJ and artist ) and thanks god actually. Everyone is searching for something new, somethin innovate. Exploring sounds is fun for the producer...if he finds himself into this??? than... why the heck not But ok, some people call this prog trance, some of them are calling it experimental sounding I am calling it new age techno and the techno is a son of acid sounding... so Techno is interfier aswell
anyhow... they have released ambient aswell: http://www.psyshop.com/shop/CDs/ibo/ibo1cd008.html /// but they aint an ambiental label ))

but why are you such affected by it? if you like the music, you like the music. the map is not the territory. psyshop has their own way of classifying stuff and their purpose is to sell. they are not trying to cater to music snobs.
it's entirely possible people classify shit differently. i have my way. if i'm talking with soundmagus and he understands what i'm talking about, then that's all that matters. if the label doesn't sufficiently convey the meaning, then additional words need to be added for clarification. that's all.
and some things simply don't nicely fit into these neat categories anyway. just accept this. as an example, all my music is just split into 4-5 folders because otherwise i would spend months agonizing where i should put certain albums. i know this, so i just made it easier on myself. |
