Hey everybody,
At nearly all of the parties I have seen (especially around here), while we usually have a nice assortment of Dark,Pure, and Full-On headliners; I do not see progressive or chillout artists receiving as much attention. Surely this has something to do with the fact that in our particular area of the electronic music scene, progressive music is not designed to be "peak time" music. Of course in other branches of the EDM scene, this isn't the case. Mainstream electro, tech, and progressive are getting "peak time" play, and a lot of the tracks sound unmistakably upbeat. Because of this, I've seen that a lot of the traditionally "progressive psytrance" or "chill out" people getting more playtime in other scenes rather than the psy scene. At least this seems to be the case in much of the United States. I've seen in parties across Europe, you often have people like Ticon, Antix, Vibrasphere, and others playing on MAIN stages alongside mainstream electro and tech headliners. But it seems like the psy parties in Europe like them a lot too. I have seen Simon Posford in various forms, as well as Younger Brother getting attention in the indy, dub, and other more mainstream scenes as well.
In any case, while I've seen a lot of these people playing in alternative scenes around the United States, I do not often see PROGRESSIVE or CHILLOUT headliners listed at most West Coast psy parties. I've seen a few on the NYC side of things, but it still seems like a neglected genre of sorts.
Anyway, to bring some attention to it, I thought we could list some of the progressive, chillout, or any "alternative" genre act that you would like to see played at gatherings.
For me:
Vibrasphere (in addition to their normal stuff, I would really like to see these guys throw down a CHILL-OUT SET. Their two 'Selected Downbeats' albums are fantastic imho.)
Ticon
Antix (just missed this ack!)
Flegma
Tegma
Ace Ventura
Perfect Stranger
Rocky
Neelix
Felguk
Atmos
For me I've been getting into more of this stuff recently, so the list continues to grow.

Each organizer specialize in different music styles.
Check "Green Sector" for progressive Psytrance music.
And "Terrakroma" for the Prog-Tech-Minimal Music.
Actually Los Angeles (i think you are from the area) is the biggest scene in the USA for Progressive music. |

Oh I definitely know about the organizers you named hehe. And I'm not denying that we do get SOME of this kind of music. But you have to admit that we get a lot more "Faster" music headliners than these.
Even if we do have it the best, we can always shoot for better.

I was just thinking about this last night while listening to some psyprog .
In 2007 Chilluminati has Aes Dana as the main headliner for Earthdance...
I'm just excited to be seeing Zen Mechanics and Atmos at Orb this year. Would LOVE to see all of those acts you listed.
Aerospace, Etic, Odiseo (mexico) and True Lies are others.
I don't think I could justify bringing one of those guys out to headline a 1 nighter though.

Why beat around the bush by citing tech-prog-minimal-electro-psy this or minimal-electro-prog-tech that?
Techno Techno Techno Techno. can be pretty f'ing psychedelic and trance-ier than trance on occasion. ;-) cheers.

Some acid and minimal techno maybe. I haven't run into much. Maybe I just space out after the same 4 bar loop has been on repeat for the past 32 bars....
I thought the new Woody McBride EP was going to be good and acidy, but it was pretty meh.

well sure, you have to dig
the same bassline rhythm has been repeating in psytrance for the last decade, but noone complains too much... they just space out to it ;-) so ultimately not much difference, in my mind.
what's the difference between prog psy and techno?
techno has more rhythms and less synth? prog psy is heavily harmonic, pads+chord+bassline+synths always feeling up the key of the passage? would make a punter want to try that "mixed in key" mumbo jumbo, i'd think...

The bassline in psy has a specific purpose though - to induce trance (alpha brain waves yea!). You could make music without it, it just wouldn't be psytrance.
On topic: I love psyprog, but putting a psyprog headliner on at the peak time would kill the mood at most parties. Maybe build up from some chill/psydub/psybreaks to psyprog or have psyprog in the early morning...

I don't think that psytrance bassline has any exclusive connection to alphawave activity that rhythms in many other forms of music don't also have... it's a hot bassline though, don't get me wrong.
anyways, (on topic) i'm all for mixing genres/idioms and building energy at parties to sustain/evolve the "trance" rhythms...
it can be kind of disappointing to hear a psytrance DJ play his most bangin'est new psytrance tracks at 10pm friday night on a weekend-long festival when everyone is just warming their minds up.
make em wait til midnight, they'll appreciate the psytrance rhythm more that way. maybe shoot off some fireworks or something
but I suppose attendees do want their "headliner" (if there is only one) to be near a "peak" of the journey, not halfway to the peak or at the beginning...

Chilluminati folks once in a while bring great psychill/ambient headliners to their shows in Midwest(so far they booked Aes Dana, Mahiane, Phutureprimitive, Robert Rich, Androcell, KiloWatts and Aligning Minds).
PS. Go Tyler

It comes down to money. Most of the acts that Kahn sited cost above normal price because they do play out alot in Europe. If your bringing in 1 - 4 headliners for the main stage, you better have 1000 people coming or 1, you'll lose your as= or 2 your show will lack in other area's such as deco and things. Organizers already have to pay for tons of things besides acts to put on a show, so they pick the ones they want. |

Rich makes a good point.
Most of them, from what I've heard, charge a booking fee of 1000-1500 euros (that's on top of flight and accommodation).
Also, Robert Rich is fucking AMAZING! His music fits in so well with the downtempo atmosphere. Compared to all the musical performances I've seen over the years, his performance at Earthdance last year was only second to a chicago symphony orchestra performance I saw with Yo-Yo Ma (and that one will probably never be topped).
