Give this stuff to someone who's never listened to psy before, and he'll tell you it's more or less the same thing.
|
|
Why do people bother saying this. We're discussing this on a psytrance forum where most of us are pretty familiar with the music. This is the context.
We know that full on and progressive sound different. And then further, we know that not all progressive has the same sound. Which is what the original question of this topic was about.
or so we thought, till he revealed more...

It is just taste. And it changes from time to time
There is really good proggy stuff, but also really a lot of ultra crap IMO

I like progressive trance a lot but day by day I discover more and more fresh music for my ears! While some of my friends are addicted to techno/tech house/minimal tunes I discovered artists like Mathew Johnson,Nathan Fake,MFA,Solvent and many others and I realy like their music while artists from our scene as Son Kite and Midi Miliz with their side projects Minilogue and Extrawelt are evolving to this sound!Just listen the remix of minilogue at jaia's orchestra 2.0..I don't think that's has to do with progressive sound..Or Son Kite's live when I saw them last week was closer to minimal tech stuff! As for the typical progressive psy trance I think that the last months I didn't hear something special!Even Iboga's set 5 was too pour for my ears,Moonflower's Grand Avenue with the super line up wasn't something special too except the Son kite and Human Blue track! So what's happening? Is the progressive scene becomes like the full on?Stucked at the same formulas?

my thoughts about prog:
well, not to long ago i always thought it wasn't complicated enough - to repititive, same old rythms, no diversity=boring.
but then something happened to me
i got a diffrent point of view-instead of focusing on complexity&little details i got more focused on the big picture. now i can tell u that in my oponion, even though it lacks the confusing&challanging effect psychedelic trance has(i mean true psy, not fullon shit) progressive trance is much more emotional, flowing, and less "stressfull" then psy is.
because the way i see it, each trance track has two aspects-the music, and the story. i mean, check out fullon-no story, pure sounds. check out sandman-not much melodies or beats, but a true story in each track. so when i listen to trance, i ike either enjoying the mind games&story, or just the sounds. and when it comes to progressive, there may not be much of a story in albumns like antix's "twin coast discovery" or son kite's "colours", but the music is so damnnnn great!
the thing is, it's pleasant music-even if made with phat basslines and fast bpm. its not stressfull, it doesn't make u get tired of listening...sort of laid back. that's why nowadays, i listen to prog, chill&ambient like 80% of my time, and rarley listen to psy anymore...it just feels right.
two things i would like to make clear here:
1. evreything i said here is quite fresh, the change happenned quite recently
2. i still think then when in ganja state, it is better to listen to psy, because u can concentrate on the little details and "le'echol sratim" & stuff like that |

Minilogue is one of the best. I really don't know what are u all tolking about, but imo the progg Trance it this year is on his strongest form!
and as in was said before...probably we should stop putting labels on music and just N JOY. I understand it now.
