So, my clarinet that I haven't played in a long time has been collecting dust at my parents house and I was thinking it would be something fun to relearn and play during some live chill sets.

I'm looking for any programs or general tips for processing the sound (for live playing as well as recording in the studio). Any and all info you guys can give to me would be wonderful as I have no idea what I could do with this and want to be able to do a lot . I would like to have the freedom to manipulate the sound significantly as well as have it sound like a nice normal clarinet. Thanks!

ableton (since that's what you are going to be using anyway).

you can record a few bars and once it starts to loop, you can mangle the sound with some fx (delays and phasers should be good.... maybe some kind of glitch fx, but since it's chillout, maybe that won't be a good idea for that). just prepare your fx chain before hand and assign your midi controller's knobs to something fun. since your arms will be busy playing the clarinet, you will need a foot pedal to control record/play/delete (in case you fuck up). you can pick up a used behringer fcb1010 for about $100 on craigslist. you can probably set this up without a footcontroller, but it just won't be as flexible.

During a live chill set? You could always go the ol' Miles Davis electric era route, and route the clarinet through a wah-wah, maybe a touch of distortion and phaser, then some delay. Always a good treatment for dubbing out a sound.

Ridiculously easy to do in Ableton Live, by the way.

Don't forget dummy clips either. Those are really good for controlling automation when you need your hands free.

Yeah I was thinking something with a pedal would work best for real time sound alterations. My initial thought was that I could send it through some sort of vocoder, but I guess the possibilities are actually endless as to what I can do, just need to find out what actually sounds good.

I hope Colin reads this since he plays live instruments with OOOD. Would be good to hear what he has to say . I know some other people that play live instruments routed through instruments so I'll probably ask them to.          http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

I don't necessarily need something I have to move around to manipulate sound. Having some patches in a vst set up to create certain types of sound would work fine too.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

This one is cool for guitars, i wonder if its possible to connect other instruments to it?
I Remember the loop function being so cool,
and the FX was very tweakable.. had great fun on it with some mushrooms and vine.. though with a guitar, and it looks like it has only one input, would be cool with such a loop tool were you punch in and loop.. and add new layers and taking away...

maybe ableton live with pedals and controllers is the thing.. =)
