I …
I understand most of what you say, I do some times find that when I get a nice pad sound and than try to cut out the lower end and top end to try and make fit in the space..
The sound loses its power and presence… (leads too)
Am I right in thinking that eq is important but you must also important to keep instruments in different octaves i.e. lets say
Bass C1
Pads C2
Leads C3
And so on… I had problems with high hats before… but I should explain…
When I listen to psy … I find the High Hats come out the top of the monitors the bass from the bottom and the kick I actually hear this in the lower middle…
To me that is how I see it in my head… and all the leads are in between with the percussion and snares… leads some times are up near the high hats …
I can hear it im just having probs putting my sounds in the right places and keep the power behind them …
I hope this makes sense. …
This is why I asked the question …. J

yeah man.. makes alot sense
It's to do with the ears perceptions of frequencies, also to do with the fact that often that is how speakers are made, tweaters for his at the top and bass at the bottom.. but more it's the first reason.
Eq is important... keeping instruments at different octaves however isn't (IMO)
Bass is bass... it's always low
Leads should sound like you want them.. not how you THINK they should sound... pads anywhere as well "whatever floats your boat" so to speak...

Is right, but the good producer makes them sound separate and cohesive.
good luck!

Is there specific effects and dynamics that are used for leads, basses etc?

its about money and hard work for years i guess..
About leads u mention u should listen in into ur track.
Try low cut at 80-140 and play with the stereo image.

this is not necessarily true at all.....this is the thing when i said about understand , saying octaves for each instrument is a limiting thing,...and not the correct way to think....
for example one can use a bass in the C3 range depending on how your filter is set and how the oscillators are set up as well as how you EQ it afterwards.....
you can have pads running as far as C3 and C4 depending on what sound you are looking for and for what effect....often in alot of uplifting morning trance the higher octaved pads are very effective.
so again i say.....understand, and listen
it hasnt been mentioned here so far i think , but not only EQ and compression , but also basic mixing and leveling is so important for effectively making things stick out in the mix,...
getting your level correct is so important, like where your lead and bass sit decibal wise...these things have to be research and practiced to get it as close as possible to being perfect...
