I find one of the most important things that helps define the bass line is not only your Amp env but also the length of the notes. I always turn snap off and make sure they aren't running into each other and give them varying lengths. (usually a little longer on the 3rd step of each beat)

Exactly. That, velocity, and note spacing too.
Typically I make the first two shorter than 16th and the 3rd one is almost a full 16th. |

Creative productions, Tracks are moving! Thats the main issue mostly to get that thing right first, mixing are always a problem in different levels..
But i like the athmosphere you are trying to create i can see the picture.. only it feels you have some sounds too loud and over processed, it dont need that much in my opinion. Bass has some sort of box character, like quadrafuzz kind of effect which is a matter of taste of course.
Keep doing those sound scapes but like POM said try to get them even more natural, because sometímes like breaks/intros it feels very real and touchy but more powerful elements can messing it up if their are not in control..

If you like that kind of ''boxy'' or a bit cold effect to bass you should try quadrafuzz for sure, it has some short of boxy feeling in my opinion, even i prefer more warmer basslines, more fullfilled and pleasant. Maybe one day i will create one myself..
At the meanwhile i keep searching

thats an interesting point...
you know, i dont want to copy anybody but also i think its always terrible if people like in other threads write things like "try ur own basslines+sound...dont imitate others and blabla.."
thats complete shit. thats called inspiration. one artists hears another and tries something out and learns that way..
theres a certain bass-sound, i´d like to discuss with you.
some examples:
Side Effects - one mans vision
Rocky - Drum selected
Zyce - Spirits
Ovnimoon - the Source
Zentura - light Mutations
what do you think about that?

Yes side effects have a very clean and tight bass
I'm in search of such tight basses and I get closer and closer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gs5FtxCBEvo
dunno if it is said in the video as I watched it some month ago but, with sampling your bassnotes have each their own impact and that gets clarity and rolling
eq it right, these low mids/midrange really makes mud but be careful not to overdo it as the bass can loose power
right envelope tweaking is important too, I was surprised how the sound changes with time after I found out that it must be plucked, I get better results now(mostly really low cutoff, env amount to taste, and little decay mostly + amp env. also not that much decay, some sustain etc.
which compressor you use on the bass transients will have a massive effect on your sound, at least when I tried out different, some brought that pluck out really snappy and tight cutting through the mix, whereas other did little on that
groove is also important for that 3x note bass, mark them all in your clip or whatever and move them(or just some of them) forth and back a bit and check where it sounds most groovy
there are different ways to achieve such basses and here I left out some stuff in my production chain of making a bass(glueing kick/bass together with comp./
this http://www.toneprojects.com/products/plug-ins/basslane/ on my kick/bass groove, gives some power to the lowend again, I also boosted the root freq. of my bass with success, it's always said not to boost but in this case I got better results, but dunno how it sounds on a PA)
