Hello all

Let me explain: I have enough money to buy a good DJ-ing set, or a good production equipment, but not enough money for both. My question is, what is more valuable, in terms of experience, Djing or production. I have read a lot of bios of famous producers and most of them started as DJs. I guess in Djing you get to know people and the whole scene... whats your opinion??

why not both? with software the way it is these days, you can blend both together in a way that is unique. I find that exploring DJing techniques is the perfect offset to the sometimes incredibly frustrating art of producing.

my advice? get a pair of monitors (which you would need for both), and a copy of Ableton with an Akai APC40 MIDI controller and you will have everything you need for a top notch interactive DJ setup, plus the flexibility to explore production should you choose

cheers!

both of them, djing and producing give ya the experience of have the control above of the music,, sonic manipulation gives ya the control about what you wanna make, taling in production time.. and i think the djing and the musicinas get to acomplish the best of the experiences about this. if you play in djing get money and if you give the live act get more money.! and learn djing its the acomplish of production. production it's sonic manipulation

Do you like going out allot?? Cause with DJ-ing it requires you to be out at parties, meeting people and generally having fun.
With production you have to stay indoors in your bedroom.. on it.....learning as much as you can all the time, in my opinion.

Dj-ing will naturally lead you on to production in time anyway....if your serious about the music you listen too or play out. At least this is what i have found.....I have just started to learn about production.....and it is not easy....but the rewards are far greater.
That said mixing 2 tunes together to create a new track/mix can be just as rewarding in it's own right and has requires allot more skill than people think.......a skill which i have found allot of producers do not have. Don't be fooled into thinking beat matching is all that it takes......once u have mastered that then u can go as deep as you want to....learning to cut frequencies or exploiting them to the extremes in a mix.........(Allen and Heath mixers are best for this) bringing specific parts of a track into another is producing something new in its own right.

Lots to think about there..........im sure u will get enjoyment out of whatever u choose to spend your money on. The bottom line tho is that its all about the love of music

Hope this helps

Personally, djing gave me the concept of structure and flow withing individual tracks and sets, and that's one of the things that has helped keep the danceability of a lot of my music. Not to mention if you aren't a musician, being a dj will really teach you about counting beats and the structure of a rhythm.

Take your time about producing music, it's a long slow path and the more prepared you are, the less time you'll spend on here asking questions.           An Eagle may soar, but Weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

i started as musician and then producer and later got to be a dj ...
djing was piece of cake once i allready knew what is a scale , what is 16 bars etc..
came out naturally very easy , with few tips from pro dj offcourse (miki from psycho micro - who was a dj 5 years before ever produced a track.. when he started he allready knew what he wants to sound like.. while i was just begin to build my own style)
so it goes both ways.. with laptop you can do it all today anyhow no need to buy expensive gear for start just good laptop and good monitors and soundcard

Awesome responses!!

I got to tell you all folks, my father was in the audio production music for years so I allready own some equipment at home.. (14 channels Mackie micro series vlz mixer, a great Sennheiser microphone and headphones, Korg trinity keyboards, and quite a good musical knowledge)... What I was thinking of buying now is a good set of monitors and a M-audio 192 soundcard...

I really dont know of a way such equipment could be used in DJing

Well, they both compliment each other. I started out djing so similar to greg I knew concepts of song structure and had developed an ear for the sound I was listening to. Once I started producing my djing also improved.

You can get a program like Traktor and dj with that combined with your mixer and a sound card. Give it a shot, it's cheap and easy and a fun way to listen to music you enjoy (just don't listen too loud and ruin your ears for production ). Often times I'll take a break from production and spin some tracks. I also get inspiration when I'm spinning and hop over to my computer to produce.          http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound
