Hello there everybody, i'm a beginner psytrance producer, been into it for about 2 years and a half now, but i can't seem to finish any tracks, there are a lot of things that i suck at, so i was thinking that maybe it would help if i can work with somebody online ? You know, like exchanging files and stuff, is anyone interested ? The style doesn't matter, whatever you want, from dark to melodic. I'm sorry if it's not allowed or here or if i'm posting in the wrong forum.

Your style should matter, why can't you finish a tune? Too many ideas at once? If so, that doesn't need to be a bad thing.

If you can't finish a track, adding someone else into the mix is only going to complicate things.

The trick to finishing tracks is to finish the freakin tracks.

Just do it. Pick a project - stick with it until its complete. Don't allow yourself to work on anything else until its done. Then move on.

I have been doing this ever since I started ~2 years ago - and I have around 25 finished tracks and maybe 5 project files that didn't turn into a finished track.

My first 20 tracks sucked. However - the discipline to keep working on tracks and finishing them has paid me large dividends.

Finishing tracks is a skill, just like making a badass 16 bar loop is a skill - and it takes time to develop.

I don't know, i just can't make transitions from one part to another without sounding cheezy, and i lack a lot of skills in synthesis, i never have the right sounds, sometimes i think i should give up, but i can't...

That is something that happens to absolutely everyone when they're starting out - and that period of suck can be extended and drawn out if you keep making little bits of tracks and not buckle down and finish some.

Time and dedication will give you the synth skills, the arrangement skills, all of it.

Yes - your first couple finished tracks will be complete and utter shit. Badly mixed, poor synth work, poor arrangement, blah blah.

Check out my earliest soundcloud tracks. They're terrible. They make me cringe when I listen to them. At the time it felt like I was swimming through molasses - I didn't really understand what I was doing, I didn't like the synth noises, basslines and kick were all flabby and weak, didn't flow very well....

Each time though, it gets better. Don't give up!            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

You are asking for concrete answers to something that is an incredibly personal and subjective topic...

My advice, given that you've been at it for 2.5 years without a finished track, is that you need to pick your favorite project and then work on it for a month. A month is more than enough time to finish a track at the beginner level.

One of the exercises that was very helpful for me was to load in one of my favorite tracks that was sort of in the same style as the track I was trying to write..and then listen to it and see how its arranged

How long is the intro? How long is each phrase? where are the breaks and how long are they?

Mark out each section in your DAW with a little note, and then arrange your track in the same way.

DO NOT BEAT YOURSELF UP WHEN IT SOUNDS LIKE SHIT! You are *not* trying to sound like the track, you are simply getting a feel for how a really great track flows and builds on itself.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

try to make bad tracks, i m serious man, the problem could be you are to much focused on perfection. try to make a shit track in one or two day to see if you get the base of the tune covered, then polish the tune with little tweaks ,rework some arrangement ,breaks for the next tow day and it might turn like a great track..

I would never suggest making a bad track!

Wtf!

Make the best track you can with the tools and knowledge you have.

However, when you're first starting out 'your best' will suck. and that's ok. It gets better!

and IMO all this 'if its in your blood it'll turn out' is a cop out.

I knew absolutely nothing about synthesis, music, anything 2 years ago. I had no special latent musical ability - I just worked my ass off.

Everyone has the potential to be musical, but it takes hard work and a lot of time. That's ok.            If you want to make an apple pie from scratch...you must first invent the universe

yeah i see what you mean and agree, but my point is to let him make music and follow is inspiration wihtout worrying about the technical aspect to get 8 minute done of music in a short time even if it s not great... then he can retweak everyhting but the base/story of the tune will be there from the begining to the end hopefully.

the avantage i can see of not worrying about making a bad tunes, is that you never run out of inspiration and the production quality don t matter lol ,so nothing to stop someone to finish a tune it might turn like a great track ...in the end it all about the inspiration of the day.

i m not a good example as it take me much effort to finish tracks when making them alone, but at the begining i had no trouble at all as i was just writing what was coming from my head and worrying about noghting else. then with time the rest get better, but once your looking for great production, the inspiration and musical aspect will suffer imo

+1
Music is in everyone's heart, everybody has the ability to make a beat or play a few notes, developing this abillity is what it takes for you to make a tune from scratch.

can t edit my post but what i wanted to say is that we always try to do our best but it can stop us insteed of helping us cause of the pressure ,cause of wanting to do everyhting perfect.
working wihtout this pressure ,making some track just for fun, just let things flow, don t take it serious , this mindset is good for beeing productive and it can turn into great tracks as you re having fun, in trance triping , we transmit all this into the music

to give you a idea about this some psytrance hits that have blasted all the dancefloors of the world have been writed in one , 2 or 3 sessions.
learning to exploit the energy and inspiration of the moment is the key imo,it mean writing your idea in a short time, next day it can be gone ,next day you can be in a totally different mindset that will make the storie of the tune not coherent.
some tunes sound like 2 or 3 tunes assembled,or dont have a good intelligent flow ,it can eb cause of this, each part made at a different moment with different energy and inspiration..
it might different from producers to producers ...
