Headphones seriously stuff up your ears over time.
I have worked sometimes on workplace noise and you would be surprised how easily they damage your ability to hear certain frequencies or cause issues such as tinnitus/deafness.
Headphones are perfect for dj'ing or listening when non-trance people are around, but 90% of my time I use my monitors for listening and production.
I spent under $1000U.S for my two monitors and so far they have done the job fine.
Until I get paid for my efforts no need to spend $1000U.S+

I got a pair of KRK Rokit 8 G2's and cannot beleive I used to have Behringer Truth's. you can get a pair of Rokit 5's for a really awesome price, and you can also thinkg of getting their 10" sub woofer in the future, tho I don;t need it for now as I live in an apartment.
I think there is also a cheap version of the Mackie's as well.
Don't buy Behringer, seriously, they just suck.
Save up and get something for double the price you a willing to spend now, you'll thank yourself for it |

and do be careful with headphones, a mate of mine who ran a media production company used headphones heaps, ignored people telling him to monitor the headphone level, and has Tinitus so bad now he often has to stay at home bed. |

This is music to be played and listened loud.
You won't ever feel a bass rumbling on your chest with headphones... maybe you can sketch out things or work with melodies when is nightime and normal people sleep.
But i believe a nice mix should be achieved on monitors and crafted thinking it will be played very loud sometimes, eventho u dont have to fuck up your ears / equipment while working on it.
It is an expensive hobbie but if you like it enough youll find a way to get yourself nice monitors.

maybe you wont feel the bass through headphones, but I often check my tracks in headphones, both to check if the bass is right (I have small monitors, so not much bassresponse in them), and panning.
And people, if you have been using your ipod with headphones for years, you do know the sound of them. So you can compare your tracks with tracks youve been listening to for years on your pod through your headphones, and that is a great reference.
Good bass is audible but you cant feel it neither through hp or speakers. Better with too little than too much, youll get suprised how little thump you need to get it to sound big and boomy on a big pa....

DON'T DO IT. DON'T. NO BEHRINGER. EVER.
Seriously though, all of their products are lower than low end. I bought a Behringer mixer and controller early on, and they were both totally dead within 6 months. I can't imagine how their headphones must be.
  You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me? |

This is very true. One day I had no money for monitors, then.. I found a way. 1.5 months later I have a pair of ADAM A7s. Which rock by the way.. |

i know a very well known and respected producer that works only on headphones... and production is really good, i can't produce on headphones though... guess it's a matter of knowing your gear.

who is?
ontopic,
I do 90% of work in headphones, i can adjust approximate volume and eq balance, but without fixing everything on monitors my tracks would sound awful... http://soundcloud.com/aedem |

for me it's not possible only with headphones. it's more that producing with headphones sucks than a matter of quality imo.
sure you always have to compare a new track on different systems and it's possible to make a decent mix with headphones i guess.
but i would go crazy if i couldn't turn my music up when nobody's at home. or even at night when playing around on low volume and having a spliff. always these things on my head... no, thanks.
but always check your work on headphones. it's the best contrast you can get with almost no effort imo.

i can approve that it's just a hive of shit.
