Producing with headphones only

As the title dictates, this is what I am currently doing. I've only been "producing" (more like messing around on and off) with Ableton for about 2 months now. I was wondering if I should really focus on getting a set of studio monitors right now, or not worry about it for a while. Are my effots sort of going to waste when I'm just using headphones or should I not be worried about this right now?

My main concern is that some of my creations will sound different (not in a way I intend or heard with my headphones) on monitors. Is this a valid concern? Thanks!           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Dont worry about it for now.. But if u decide to go serious than monitors are next thing u need after your ears.. For now u can listen on headphones, than switch to some regular speakers and try to test your track on as much different speakers possible, for mastering u can check on some lousy mono speaker like in TV..
But still without monitors your creations will sound different than in your room.. U can come close but..           http://www.myspace.com/djacidkills

I wouldn't recommend using the headphones too much, healthwise... So be moderate at your usage, which is why I would suggest getting a pair of speakers.           Crackling universes dive into their own neverending crackle...

Im work on headphones because... I dont have other possibilities
But my last track what goes to mastering studio have only 2 things to repair (one synth 2dB too loud and other synth have too much resonance).
I think for headphones is great result.

Thanks for the responses. I didn't consider the health of my ears, but that's a great thing to think about. I also know that using headphones you lose the stereo effect you get with speakers.

I'm currently using Sennheiser HD-200s because they seal out a lot of outside noise. They don't have a good low end to them though. I was considering switching to my Technics RPDH-1200s that I use to dj with. I'm thinking the switch would be better since I am more familiar with my Technics and the levels seem more balanced. I agree with Alien Bug that I should use headphones that I'm familiar with, so using the Technics seems more logical to me.           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

To put it simply, producing with headphones is fine, mixing with them is not. Obviously you can mix with any kind of speaker, headphones or not, if you know it well enough, but having some decent monitors makes things a lot easier.           You believe in the users?
Yeah, sure. If I don't have a user, then who wrote me?

Dont use your technics for production.. I have them and I know how bass from that phones can rock.. Probably the best for djing but that means worst for production.. What will happen is that when u take your track to your friends place and play it there it wont have bass at all.. Try it and ul see..
Monitoring headphones/speakers must interpret music without ANY modification, meaning AS IS..
Dunno bout senheiser but if they are also for djing which I suppose they are than they are bad for production..
AKG produces best monitoring headphones but again, nothing compares to speakers..

Thanks for the tips guys! I wasn't sure what responses I would get, but all of them helped out a LOT.

My sennheiser's are HD-280s actually. I guess I could look up some specs for them.          http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

use both sets of headphones!

they'll both show you different things. You just have to be comfortable with how each set's pros and cons.

Even if your friend has a 500 watt sub? The point is that you have to be able to differentiate between what you're hearing on ANY system and how it actually sounds. I don't care how much your monitors and headphones cost or how many bass traps you have, because I can't trust them any more than my setup without hours and hours of experience in any other studio.           You believe in the users?

i wonder why noone is against this headphone thing, why spend more than 1000€ for only one studiomonitor, when you can do it with headphones?

i got my first mixes finished, and they all suck with headphones,
kick and bass sounds total different with my YAMAHA HS50M (still untreated room).

i wonder whats the problem, that makes that difference, because the kick sounds good with other systems too, only headphone sucks.

ill better treat my room instead of headphone mixing, i cant believe that you can get "good" results with them.

cheers

The apartment I live in is TERRIBLE for sound. I have 2 options on where to setup a "studio". First would be where it is currently at in my living room where I have a sliding glass door (roughly 8ft long and 6ft tall), a wall window (roughly 2ft wide and 6ft tall), not to mention a door that leads out to a small hallway, lots of open space with a kitchen right next to it.

The other option is my bedroom which would have a 5ftx6ft wall window next to me and a closet with a metal sliding door (this seems to be the obvious best choice of the 2).           http://soundcloud.com/ascensionsound

Yep, i agree - and if u once get used too got speakers/monitors u won't be able to produce ONLY with headphones...anyway if u can't use loud music its no question            Signature
