also one overdrive module i really love, is the old "mda overdrive" from the mda pack. freeware search for it. two button fx with drive and muffle, great for subtle warming of things, i use it very often.

Had the pack for literally years. I never tried this one.

I now LOVE it. It's freakin' awesome! Used it all over a track I'm working on.

here is the mix, what im talking about:

drums (thomas penton)
bass (zebra vst)
only the guitar and voice isnt done by myself. (made by pros)

it sounds good imo, but my friends said, that it sounds to cold and technical... now i hear it too
and i got this problem with every mix, also in psy!

-can i also distort HH ?
-do you use these "warmer"-vst“s in groups or single channels ?
-do you use limiter on groups or single channels ?

sure, you can do anything to anything man. there are no rules, only ideas

- if you use something simple like the mda drive you can put it on single channels, sure.

- grouping your percs and drums and compressing them together is also very nice.

- hard limiter only if needed, i try to avoid it, level things in the mix with compressors.

another great one for this kind of job is a plug called "LoFi+". it can do a whole bunch of other tricks, but for basic warming, the second knob from the left (i didn't make music in about a year so i don't remember what it is labeled, i think either "shaper" or "saturation"), is very nice to just warm and crank the sound. i also like sometimes to use a simple bit-crushing module like the stienberg bitcrush, using just the bitrate scaler to take the sound to anywhere between 8-12 bit, really nice, but when going 8 bit or lower you might need a noise gate after the crusher to clean up the hiss.
