hey guys,

something that gets more and more important for me, is the warm sound on every instrument.

over time, it found out, that reverb is very important, to make a realistic sound,
but somehow, i dont get this warmness. when i listen to any radio music, everthing sounds
like its made with real instruments, even the synths...

what is important for warm sounds? (i only use software)

Possibly:

Getting the low mids mixed correctly.

Balance with other sounds

Balanced level.

Distortion/saturation

Correct reverb mix

Attenuate nasty freqs

My mixes sound totally ITB, not that warm really. But I think 90% of the warmth comes from the rest of your mix, choice of sound and possibly the mastering.

warmth = distortions of all kinds (tubes, drives, amps), choruses and using fat sounds to begin with.

what faxi said, + EQ (warm sounds usually don't have a lot of hi-freqs)           http://soundcloud.com/aedem

record the sounds using a good mic!

like how live bands do it!!

it's very difficult to get natural warmth from within the cpu environment!!           "... b'om ..."

Thanks, i noticed this problem, when i tried to add a drumset to a finished acoustic guitar track. I did the drums with thomas penton "essential drums" ... It sounded very tight but to cold and technically. I didnt use any compression, minimal EQing and a little bit reverb.
Is the penton set overcompressed, or do you want me to distort the drums (HH, bassdrum ect...)??

With this problem, i thought of vintage warmer, can this vst help here? And/or how do you use this?

Atm im not at home, but ill post the example of what im talking about later.

You could get this one..http://shop.digitalaudioservice.com//product_info.php/products_id/2738

and just rerecord all your samples..would definatly do the trick since its one of the best preamps with warm character..

little expensive sure..

vinatge warmer or sonnox inflator are nice tools as well..

good luck!           -------......-------...-..-..-..-.-.-.-.-

I think you can do what you want but its almost impossible to reach a real qualy warm quality of expensive preamps and compressors with good warming tubes.
Spl preamps goldmic and compressors are quite good sounding for the price from what Ive heard and a bit mic recordings @ friends.Very nice I wish I had .

sorry but goldmice is shit definatly..not clear at all and cuts a lot of transients..

dont buy it really..if you consider to buy analog gear..go to a shop and try several things out..then check if you get for what you would pay..in comparison with software..

I know it for many years.Friends of me which produce other musics quite succesful use it.Not only goldmic this cost about 400 euro but a compressor from spl for about 1500 euro (this together) makes a killer bass and really clean sounds, they produced the best hip hop underground album in 2007 of hip hop in germany(chosen by a hip hop mag blabla).Well that my expirience only.I heard some killer bass on some house tracks from them.Though Im sure there are better things.           https://soundcloud.com/shivagarden

There is a newly released library for Nebula from AlexB called White console emulation.

http://www.alessandroboschi.eu/html/en/mwc.htm

strap a preamp before and after the fx in the chain on every channel. Its amazing how it adds harmonics in a very subtle but extremely pleasing way. You will want to eq less, all the sounds are abit more glued together....

the penton set is very compressed, but you can just lower the gain before processing, and be careful and tactful and all is good.
